Lynn Swann, center, spoke with
supporters after a news
conference last month in
Pennsylvania to say he was
considering running for governor.
CLARION, Pa. - Lynn Swann, the Hall of Fame former wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, stood before a nearly all-white Republican crowd at the Holiday Inn here recently and denounced Pennsylvania's Democratic governor, Edward G. Rendell, for failing to reduce property taxes. Then, without prompting, Mr. Swann suddenly turned the subject to race - his own.
"I'm not here to be the poster child for the Republican Party, to say they're being inclusive by running an African-American," said Mr. Swann, 54. "That's not why I'm here. I'm here to win."
Still, to many prominent Republicans, Mr. Swann, a commentator for ABC Sports, is much more than a potentially strong contender for governor in 2006. He is, they hope, part of a new crop of prominent black candidates who could help the Republicans crack, if not break, Democratic domination among black voters in several important states.
In Maryland, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, black Republicans - all of whom have been groomed by the national party - are expected to run for governor or the United States Senate next year. Several other up-and-coming black Republicans are expected to run for lower statewide offices in Missouri, Ohio, Texas and Vermont in 2006.

It is amazing though: when the dems put up a black candidate they're just terrific (thinking of Obama), but when the pubbies do it it's a durn conspiracy. The Times does it again...
translation- if the DNC had its way, as long as you were not a member of the DNC elite, you are free to do as you are told.
Thanks for the new tagline
No question that SOB is mobbed up...
One of Clinton's favorite union money suppliers.
:) I am glad that you liked it.
stood before a nearly all-white Republican crowd
That's really good reporting.....sarcasm. The media are not at all biased now are they?
This is just great , But I've often questioned why the democRATs don't promote more blacks to higher office . The pubbies have a much better record . Now look for Jesse , Rev. AL , Charlie Rangle ,and a host of other blacks to lable Lynn Swann a sell out , an uncle tom and all sorts of racial insults . Unbelievable !!!
If he wins, Leo Terrell's head will explode
thought? oops
It's Ken Blackwell, and based on what I know of him and what I know today, he defintely has my vote.
I'm in Pa. If Lynn Swann Runs for governor, he'll have my vote. What a refreshing change for this state.
As far as race goes, who cares, this man has class and principles.
Republicans, especially this administration, has done more to promote qualified persons, no matter what ethnicity, into important positions. It has been done without fanfare, and i thas been done without 'tooting the horn' that they're promoting racial equality.
Only the Dums would stoop so lo as to attend Baptist Church services during an election year. Remember Kerry, jeez, he couldn't even keep time with the music!!!! How utterly obvious.
The headline just shows how race obssessed the Times is. I never even knew Lynn Swann was black until right now, but I did know he was a big football star. The headline should read Republicans Back Former Football Great, or something like that.
I hope he kicks Rendell's butt, and Mr. Swann, I am good for at least $25.00 towards your efforts, maybe more if God is willing.
"G.O.P. Backs Blacks to Run to Lure Votes"
HA! Good catch! They make my hair hurt these people. What party ever ran a candidate to do other than "lure votes"?
Oh right, that's the dims who do that. Dems Back Panty-waist Kerry to Drive Votes Away.
Here in Maryland we have a black Democrat candidate for Senator, His name is Kweasy Mfume, (Drizzle Gray) and he has a great record of 5 illigitimate kids, getting fired from the NAACP because he couldnt keep his hands off the women there and being an obnoxious racist POS.
Against that we have a black man named Michael Steele who is the Repoublican Lt. Governor of Maryland. A man of high morals and supremely qualified for the job of Senator.
Hopefully Mr. Steele he will run and be elected . Md. already has a liberal midget woman as Senator we dont need a mental midget as well.
I would like to see then backing conservatives, not the spineless cowards that we already have.
