THE RAPID GROWTH & MODERNIZATION
OF THE RED CHINESE NAVY (PLAN) - 2005

This article is not meant to be an indepth technical analysis. It is simply meant to graphically display the enormous amount of building activity that has been going on in the Chinese shipyards for the last fgew years and what they are producing. The pcitures of the shipyard activity speak for themselves. Pictorial sections on current training by the Red Chinese with their new vessels and pictures of the already commissioned vessels are also included.

The shipbuilding pictures come from various online sources that include tourists, Chinese citizens, offical Chinese pictures, and enthusiasts. They are current and represent the unprecedented Chinese buildup, where the PLAN is bulding and/or acquiring eleven new modern major combatant classes simultaneously, with multiple copies of each ship being built, either simultaneously, or in series production. Those classes include:

Type 051C, DDG, Another new class of area defense destroyers
Type 052C Lanzhou DDG area defense destroyer. Phased array radar, VLS. Aegis like battle management
Type 052B, DDG, Guangzhou, general purpose guided missile destroyer
Proj 956, Hangzhou DDG, Chinese version of the Russian Sovremenny destroyer
Type 054, Ma'anshan FFG, general purpose guided missile frigate
Type 093, SSN, New nuclear powered attack submarine
Type 094, SSBN, New nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine
Type 039, Song SS Advanced diesel electric attack submarine
Proj 636, Yuanzheng SS, Chinese version of advanced Russian Kilo diesel electric attack submarine
Type 072-III, Large Amphibious assault ship
Type 2208, Guided missile Litoral Combat Craft, Advanced, stealthy, wave-piercing catamaran

Truly, China is building a target-rich environment.

Particularly if we are heavily engaged elsewhere when they make their move and if there is an administration in the White House anything like the Clintons or Kerry or Gore.

The Red Chinese are rapidly building up...astonishingly rapidly. The pictures do not lie and the amount of activity in their naval shipyards is truly astounding.

We have been cutting back severely in numbers of major comnbatants...I think we are going to need them back.

The ChiComms are not doing this as some kind of hobby.

Yes they are...but it will not be a pushover if it comes to that. We need to dry up their funding ASAP IMHO. Painful to do so at this point...but not as painful as what they have in store if we let it go according to their time table.

I am much more confortable with talks with the Japanese than current talks with the communists in Vietnam.

But, if we can move them towards meanigful reform, and keep them out of the Red Chinese camp while fostering emnity between the two communist countries...then good. We should not be overly optimistic or trustful...but if we could get the naval base at Cam Ranh Bay back in operation with those things in mind, that would be a good thing.

I don't know how one overcomes the financial wellsprings on their side, better to taint it or as you say dry it up.

Just a personal aside.

China;s history is its own worse enemy, not its people but its leaders air of invincibility and inevitability in the belief that they will outsurvive their opponents thru superior firepower and numbers alone.

It has worked before, and will work again, or so they have come to believe.

Recent developments both disaster and protest-wise may have some influence or near-term impact as to how quickly they can close the deal, re: Taiwan and beyond.

I don't know that they have the overall talent to make all the pieces of their new technical navies and armies play well in a real world mixup.

I hope I'm right, it won't matter if wrong.
