It's been ungodly hot all week. Supposed to cool down a little this weekend.

This is from a kid born in 1987, but, did the USSR cease to exist until 1990?.... I thought the USSR retained their control until after the BErlin Wall fell.

I noticed that, too. The USSR existed until 1991 - I was in my mid-20s then. It probably should read that Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in the Soviet Union, which eventually led to the USSR's evaporation.

But, in 1985 my view of MAD world politics was best elucidated by Klaus Meine, elder statesman:

Crossfire

Music :rudolf schenker
Lyrics:klaus meine

It seems to me a nightmare becomes reality
The last days of the paradise are gone for you and me
We're living in the crossfire
And we'll be killed at first
Why cannot people that we made the leaders of the world
Understand that we don't wanna fight
Understand that we are mush too young to die
Understand no one will survive
Understand that we love our life

Can I trust the meaning of the life line in my hand
Which is as long as exciting hundred years
I could be a lucky man
But I'm living in the crossfire
Of a time that starts to burn
Why cannot people that we made the leaders of the world
Understand that we don't wanna fight
Understand that we are mush too young to die
Understand no one will survive
Understand that we love our life

Well, speaking of 1985, that was the year New Coke came out. I can't believe they're still using "Coke Classic" 20 years later-what, are they hoping for a New Coke comeback? It was also the year that the wreckage of the Titanic was found. When I first saw the footage the thing that came to my mind was a TV movie, "Goliath Awaits," about the discovery of a luxury liner that had been sunk during WW2 and which still had people, the descendents of the original passengers and crew, living on it.

1985 was also the year of those music-lyrics hearings on Capitol Hill, where Dee Snider, John Denver, and Frank Zappa all testified before a committee led by Tipper Gore. Al Gore claimed at the time that he was a fan of Zappa's music. These were the infamous hearings which led to warning lables being placed on albums.

My daughter was crazy about New Kids on the Block at about this time.

"...can you imagine me nice little Generxer with pink hair being Republican LOLOLOL!"

I recall during the funeral last year that several media outlets had commented on Reagan's impact on young Americans and how youth gravitated to him. I saw him as a cool grandfather figure who was pleasant but did not take any crap off of anyone. Also, the man simply "Rocked." Viva la Regan Revolucion!

My husband was furious. The building he worked in is fairly new and the AC wasn't working. Are you looking forward to the 4th?

Well, it sounds like y'all are going to have a wonderful time together. I would be totally shocked if my family ever all got together. The last time we had a reunion was 5 years ago and everyone promised to stay in touch. Of course, they didn't.

New Kids?! Ack! I trust that you have performed a musical exorcism on your daughter. :-)

In 1985, I was into Van Halen (and similar groups) and New Wave. I have a heck of a New Wave CD collection; dang, now I feel an urge to play some Thompson Twins while I participate on this thread.

EWWW!! That would have been purely AWFUL!! It's been extremely humid to go with the heat - so much that it's been icky hazy with it.

The 4th will be spent entertaining hubby's family at the farm. It has it's good and bad points! LOL!

Let me see. 1985. I was flying out of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, spending a lot of time in Kotzebue and fighting with my branch manager at DA about going to the Maintenance Test Pilot Course at Ft. Eustis and not back to Mother Rucker.

Ok - because I'm totally lazy and don't want to look it up - didn't they sing "Hold Me Now"?

She was just 11 years old! It was totally appropriate. She got to go to one of their concerts in Sacramento. I consider it a rite of passage.

She's grown into a wonderful young woman and mother. The effects of the New Kids, apparently, was not fatal.

LOL! Besides, they had some cute music.

When you listen to the lyrics, you realise just how nationalistic it is (I mean that in a good way). After listening to it, I feel like opening a Foster's and saying, "This here's the wattle, the emblem of our land. You can stick it in a bottle, you can hold it in your hand."
