"People in the church have strong yet different views on abortion and it has not divided us; I don't believe this has to divide us either."

Sure it does.....it divides those in error from the Body because truth is not subjective. "Thy Word is Truth." (John 17:17b) And on such matters, God has said.

historic "firsts," which include being the first denomination to ordain an African-American (in 1785), the first to ordain a woman (1853), and the first to ordain an openly gay man (1972).

Weren't they also the first to ordain an athiest?

Don't know....but they certainly aren't the first (or last) to make-it-up-as-we-go-along!

You realize this is the church of the Puritans? I was raised in this church (Congregationalist), this makes me sick.

Some hold fast to the word of God, some try to modernize and "improve" on it.

And these blatantly trumpet that the word of God in the canonical scriptures is not enough and not final, as in their new advertising slogan "God is still speaking."

I was Senior Deacon (Congregational, UCC) and held this bs off as long as my term lasted. It's all over now.

My old, childhood home church was affiliated with the United Church of Christ (It was a combination of two denominations in one smalltown church--UCC and UUA). Both denominations have gone straight down the toilet, long since, IMO.

"A church's struggle over gay marriage"???? What struggle?

BTW, I was talking to my sister on the phone not long ago. She is in Illinois and described Obama as a "devout Congregationalist" (she had read that somewhere). I laughed, and it made her mad.

I wonder, did it never occur to anybody anywhere in your "church" leadership to deny membership to nonbelievers?
I am not piling on, but come on, your church must have known and facilitated the members who destroyed the congregation of true believers of church doctrine.
Why did they allow it?

Proverbs 14:12: There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

This proverb covers abortion, lying about sex, ignoring the murder of a young woman by a Democratic Senator, outlawing Bible possession and saying grace in school, no fault divorce, same sex marriage, same sex adoption, sexual content on TV, Freedom of speech for pornography, homosexual scoutmasters, The Democratic Party....
What have I missed?

Why did they allow it?

Because being "inclusive" is the greatest virtue
standing for any principle and being "judgemental" is the only vice.

So where did you go when you left UCC? Just curious 'cause I never found any other church.

"Thus far of the leadership of the National Council of Churches of Christ in America, we have found over 100 persons in leadership capacity with either Communist-front records or records of service to Communist causes. The aggregate affiliations of the leadership, instead of being in the hundreds as first indicated, is now, according to the latest count, into the thousands, and we have yet to complete our check, which would certainly suggest, on the basis of authoritative sources of this committee, that the statement that there is infiltration of fellow travelers in churches and educational institutions is a complete understatement."

Report by Richard Arens, staff director of the House committee on Un-American Activities, 1960

"Other mainline Christian churches are struggling this summer over ordination of gays and the blessing of same-sex unions."

There is no struggle whatsoever in true evangelical churches. It is churches that have been taken over by liberals and gays that are "struggling" with it. The struggle is to force it on the conservative members.

Try finding one that believes in the Bible for a change, that might help. There are plenty of them, they are "non-denominational" but here's a hint: If folks are going inside with Bibles in hand that's a pretty good sign, if they are going inside with some Pop-culture psychological best-seller, that ain't the one! I know, I belonged to a "mainstream" church that did that--flee from them.
