Militants kill journalist in Russia's Caucasus

MOSCOW, June 29 (Reuters) - An Islamic militant group said on Wednesday it had killed a journalist working in Russia's turbulent North Caucasus, accusing him of being a Kremlin lackey. The Shariat group in Dagestan, which neighbours Chechnya, said in a statement on rebel Web site www.kavkazcenter.com it had killed Magomed-Zagid Varisov, a writer and commentator whose views appeared in the local and national press. "With Allah's permission we have destroyed this scum, giving him finally a taste of the reality of our words and death," the statement said. "This lackey worked for the secret service and actively carried out propaganda against Allah and His Messenger on the pages of the local puppet newspapers."
Russian news agencies said Varisov was shot dead outside his home in Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala, on Tuesday evening.
The decade-old war between Chechen separatists and Russian soldiers has infected other Caucasus regions such as Dagestan, where blasts and killings are common.
The day that it happens here then the RDDb's might pull their heads out.

Professional activity behind N Caucasus political expert's murder

MAKHACHKALA, June 28 (Itar-Tass) - Most obvious motive behind Tuesday night's murder of the political expert and journalist Magomedzagid Varisov, the director of the Center for Strategic Initiatives and Political Technologies based in the North-Caucasian territory of Dagestan, was the man's professional activity, Dagestani investigators believe.
Law enforcement sources said unknown gunmen had opened fire at Varisov's Volga car when it was passing by the building of general school No, 36 on Mayakovsky Street.
Fire was opened from a submachine-gun.
Varisov got multiple wounds and died on the spot, while his wife survived the assassination and was not wounded. Varisov's driver was wounded and taken to hospital.
Avenging for his occupational and professional service is the main version the investigators are working at.
For a number of years, Varisov worked at the information and analysis department of the territorial legislature and at the territorial Ministry of Nationalities, External Relations and Information.
He published articles in the mass media, giving unbiased assessments to recent developments in Dagestan, which borders Chechnya in the west.
One of his last articles contained reflections on who might be claiming the top posts in Dagestan in the light for rumors that power in this region would change hands soon.
It's heartening to be reminded that one's enemies are superstitious fools.
