The rock in the kabaa appears to be a meteorite of uncertain provenance. I saw some shaky video footage of it the other day on The History Channel. Pilgrims were shoving their heads into a little alcove that contained the rock, hoping to get some sort of blessing from it.
It's heartening to be reminded that one's enemies are superstitious fools.
