China Secretly Constructing an Aircraft Carrier

Hong Kong Economic Daily(Jing-ji-ri-bao) reports
2005/06/30

China recently completed the final design for an Chinese aircraft carrier, and start in early August to construct it in secret at Jiang-nan Shipyard, Zhang-xing Island near Shanghai, reported the June 29th issue of Hong Kong Economic Daily(Jing-ji-ri-bao,) quoting (Chinese) high-level military sources.

Costing 3 billion yuan(390 million dollars), which takes up 3% of Chinese military budget, this carrier, due to be completed next year if everything goes well, has top speed 30 knots per hour and  its maximal displacement is 78,000 ton. It is equipped with Russian engines and radars.

It will carry 54 fighter planes and 13 anti-submarine helicopters, and the introduction of latest Russian fighters(Su-33) is also in the works. When it would be in service in 2008, it is expected to boost Chinese naval strength.

The paper reports, "Zhang Guang-qin, vice minister of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, denied the rumor that a carrier is under construction. However, he emphasized  it is the sacred duty of the Chinese navy to safeguard the country's sovereignty of territorial waters. It is in this context which they go for the construction of the carrier."

I get it. Anyone who makes less than the minimum wage in the US in another country is a "slave."

It doesn't matter what the cost of living there might be.

No angled deck?

The angled deck appeared in the '50s. The British were the first to employ it and I think the first US carrier to be built with it was USS Forrestal.

Every carrier capable USN aircraft has a minimum wind over the deck (WOD) requirement for launch and recovery.

Lighly loaded, some aircraft can be catapulted with zero kts WOD, however, once combat stores and fuel are loaded, most require on the order of 30 kts WOD for safe launch.

Minimum WOD for recovery varies with aircraft type. It is in the range of 20 to 30 kts -- at least it was when I was an active LSO in the 1960s and 70s.

I am assuming that, despite the advances in technology, the WOD requirements today mirror those of 30 years ago -- though I could be wrong.

Generally speaking, the higher the WOD, the better, for both launch and recovery, up to about 35 kts.

The current state of the state in Big China is pretty much like what they've had almost all of their history.

China was a leading nation for a long time, once along with the Roman Empire.

I no longer comment on the JSF, but I maintain my original position, with a list of folks to send the ' I told you so's' to when the moment arrives.

As Submariners say: There are two kinds of seaborne weapons platforms. Sumbmarines and their Targets!"

There's a reason why Aircraft Carriers are called "Torpedo Trawlers" and "Missilie Magnets"! Unless the Carrier has some superlative ASW assets and AEGIS. All the Chinese are doing is building a huge floating Bull's eye.

Jack.

Couple of things on the Japan/US situation.
The JFK has been funded by the senate again, so it will be around for a while. (barf)
We already have a Wasp class ships permanently deployed in Sasebo plus LPD/LSD. (Amphibious Squadron ELEVEN)
The KH CBG is the biggest in the Navy. 7 Aegis class ships.
The new LHA(R) is one big amphib (910 ft). When she comes on line the JSF will be just about ready. Together they can replace the KH/JFK and would be a more effective weapon system.
The Japanese government is cranking up it's people for China/NK. We recently deployed a PAC-III battery to protect Tokyo. They are building Aegis ships (their Kongo class) to match the Chinese buildup. They also have deployed Marines to protect the southern most Ryuku Islands where the ChiCom sub traversed it's territorial waters. They are very skilled at ASW. They are also in the process of deploying 2 squadrons of their F-15J fighters (F-15E with anti-ship weapons) to their base on Okinawa.

Will it be as good as ours? Of course not, it will be of much lower quality and efficiency. In fact it will be a bad sh*ty Chinese design.

China, more or less, has busted out of their corner of the world more than once. They could do it again.

JANE'S DEFENCE INDUSTRY - JULY 01, 2005

Lockheed move F-35 Joint Strike Fighter into production

James Murphy

LOCKHEED Martin said on 20 June that the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme has migrated from the engineering development phase to aircraft production.

It was also announced that all four major subassemblies for the first F-35 have been joined and parts fabrication was underway for the second aircraft.

Tom Burbage, general manager of the F-35 JSF programme integration, said: "While development work continues on the F-35, technical issues have now been largely settled and we are placing added emphasis on entering into production-and-sustainment agreements with our JSF partner countries."

The announcement follows the award of four contracts for subassemblies, totalling nearly US$330 million, to international partners in Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Turkey.

The first F-35, currently being assembled at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas, is scheduled for its first flight in the third quarter of 2006. A total of 15 flight-test aircraft, seven ground-test articles and one pole model for radar-signature testing will be built during the current System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase of the programme.

Production, sustainment and follow-on development agreements, through which JSF partner countries will place orders for F-35s, are slated to be signed in late 2006. Low-rate initial production of operational F-35s commences in 2007.
