China Secretly Constructing an Aircraft Carrier
China recently completed the final design for an Chinese aircraft carrier, and start in early August to construct it in secret at Jiang-nan Shipyard, Zhang-xing Island near Shanghai, reported the June 29th issue of Hong Kong Economic Daily(Jing-ji-ri-bao,) quoting (Chinese) high-level military sources.
Costing 3 billion yuan(390 million dollars), which takes up 3% of Chinese military budget, this carrier, due to be completed next year if everything goes well, has top speed 30 knots per hour and its maximal displacement is 78,000 ton. It is equipped with Russian engines and radars.
It will carry 54 fighter planes and 13 anti-submarine helicopters, and the introduction of latest Russian fighters(Su-33) is also in the works. When it would be in service in 2008, it is expected to boost Chinese naval strength.
The paper reports, "Zhang Guang-qin, vice minister of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, denied the rumor that a carrier is under construction. However, he emphasized it is the sacred duty of the Chinese navy to safeguard the country's sovereignty of territorial waters. It is in this context which they go for the construction of the carrier."

Answer my question first. You're assigning labels that I think are false, and doing so intentionally.
ahem ... forgot the link

Fifty four aircraft and 78,000 ton carrier sounds awfully ambitious for a nation with no carrier aviation experience.
Now, 54 planes and 13 choppers on a 78,000 ton hull (unless it's a nuc boat) sounds like a floating gas can. That's not enough displacement to hold that many aircraft, their fuel and ordinance for anything approaching extended operations. It will, in effect, be an ASW platform with short range fighters for local defense.
I doubt very much that the Chinese have put much time or effort into UNREP to keep the thing at sea for very long.
The angled dck was a development of the jet age. The Shinano was built during the Second World War and sunk in port before her maiden voyage.
"Yeah. They have so much experience with carrier landings."
Put a DemRat in the White House on 08 and watch how quick we help train the Chinese carrier operations. The Clintoons already helped them get advanced missle guidance technology.
One US carrier is always in the vicinity of Japan and the Korean peninsula. I haven't kept up, but I'm sure Tokyo Bay and Yokosuka are still open to US ships and planes.
Teh Kitty Hawk is about to be retired, if it hasn't been already.
Isn't this thing what the submarine guys call a "target"?
>"They can sure build them cheaper than we can."<
And, Billy Jeff Clintoon probably saved them billions in R&D by furnishing plans to U.S. carriers for campaign dough.
Clinton left office before they could steal the other chapters of the manuals.
The Midway class CV's were smaller than that, with a larger airwing.
"Slave labor" at FR means labor costs lower than American wages, right?
You already answered it. Were you seriously looking for someone to take that seriously?
It is hard to imagine the Kitty Hawk still in service. If she is still in service, her crew needs to be commended. Perhaps they ought to put a Tarawa class in its place if we can't keep a nuke in Yokosuka.
