Racist Mexican Stamps Stir Outrage

MEXICO CITY — The Mexican government has issued postage stamps depicting an exaggerated black cartoon character known as Memin Pinguin (search), just weeks after remarks by President Vicente Fox (search) angered U.S. blacks. The series of five stamps released Wednesday depicts a hapless boy drawn with exaggerated features, thick lips and wide-open eyes. His appearance, speech and mannerisms are the subject of kidding by white characters in the comic book, which started in the 1940s and is still published in Mexico. Activists criticized the stamps as offensive, though officials denied it. "One would hope the Mexican government would be a little more careful and avoid continually opening wounds," said Sergio Penalosa, an activist in Mexico's small black community on the southern Pacific coast. "But we've learned to expect anything from this government, just anything," Penalosa said. In May, Fox riled many by saying Mexican migrants take jobs in the United States that "not even blacks" want. Fox later expressed regret for any offense the remarks may have caused, but insisted his comments had been misinterpreted. Carlos Caballero, assistant marketing director for the Mexican Postal Service, said the new stamps are not offensive, nor were they intended to be.

YEah, and the Nazis made the Jews look like monkeys, and the US made the Japanese look like buck-toothed blind monkeys and so it goes. De-humanization. It used to be an evolution joke -- you want to see a monkey? Go look in the mirror, you'll see a monkey. Got a Santa Claus fired about 10 years ago for saying it to a black kid.

The ruling class of Mexico is racist. They are encouraging the mestizos, the dark skinned poor of their nation to emigrate to America. This overt display of disrespect is par for the course.

The people who scream about racism in America don't have a clue how racist the rest of the world is.

"Everybody's sister knows Speedy Gonzales!," answers the other mice.

Just watch any Mexican-produced TV show on Univision. You'd think from watching those shows, that everyone in Mexico is white, as oppossed to 80% mestizo. Mexico bears more resemblence to apartheid-era South Africa than probably any other nation on Earth.

The good news is the Rev. Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton will be down in Mexico bloviating for a while.

Oh, wait, I forgot all the racist cartoons directed at Condi by the Marxist cartoonists and the deafening silence from Revs Jesse and Al.

Honestly, I can't believe I'm seeing this in the modern world.

I remeber when I was a kid, Fritos had the Frito Bandito as the spokes cartoon but it was deemed racist and so the Frito Bandito had to hit the unemployment line.

I was thinking that too. When I've watched Univision or Telemundo the only way I can tell the actors are supposed to be Hispanic is that they are speaking Spanish. I see more pale blondes in a typical telanovella than I do in my own Scandinavian family! I find it very odd, since the audience for these networks is overwhelmingly mestizo. Is there some sort of self-loathing going on here? Whatever it is, it stinks of some serious racial issues in Mexican culture. These stamps are another sign of serious racism - they are simply disgusting.

Mad TV or SNL did a great parody of a Mexican variety show. Unfortunately, I can't remember much except for the laughter...

I hate the whole PC thing, with people who live to be offended getting 'outraged' over the least little thing, but those stamps, I have to admit, are beyond the pale.

It shows gross cultural ignorance of the U.S. on the part of the Mexicans.

People from outside the U.S. think they know everything about us because of American TV shows, American movies and American news outlets and that we're the ignorant ones. Well, these stamps just go to show how obtuse THEY are.

That's obviously the hope of Mexico's ruling class.

They've just got to make sure that northern border stays wide open.
