Ever noticed how they 'talk to you' right after you pull them out, squeaking really. The one that jabbed me was prob. laughing: they've got some sort of venom in those little barbs. I try to stay away from the north end after nailing the head to a plank.
Good eating!

Also, when they are that large and old, they usually aren't very good for eating anyway.

Do those giant catfish have the barbs on their backs?
What about their whiskers?
I think I'd swim in other waters.

"What about their whiskers?"
Just feelers for feeling about the bottom.
"Do those giant catfish have the barbs on their backs?"
In every fin, I believe, including the dorsal.
"I think I'd swim in other waters."
I would too, but mainly because of the flukes and other nasties that will make go blind, insane, sterile, and dead.

project to protect large freshwater fish That catfish probably ate hundreds of pounds of live young fish every year, but also probably cleaned even more dead fish from the water.

Well thank you ern. It's great when you get someone else to show off for you...it is not a 140# Catfish but I can do one better....I did hook a 1200# Stellar Sealion. He had munched 5 salmon of mine and finally he got the hook caught on him somewhere, it was only a 3 second fight but think he spooled out about 300' of line in 2 seconds...

That depends on the species. A flathead also known as an oppelouses (spl) or op for short only dines on live bait where as a channel, blue or bullhead will eat most anything. If you want to catch a big cat use a one pound carp, if you want a really big one use a two pounder.
