COLUMBIA, Maryland (Ticker) - Los Angeles Clippers forward Chris Wilcox was arrested Monday and charged with carrying a gun in his car.
According to a police spokesperson, Wilcox was pulled over early Monday after an officer saw his car weaving. The officer found a handgun in the car and Wilcox was charged with transporting a gun in a vehicle and released on his own recognizance.
"We are aware of the situation Sunday night concerning Chris Wilcox," Clippers vice president of communications Joe Safety said in a statement. "We have been in contact with Chris and his representatives. His representatives are keeping us informed as to any developments. Beyond that, there is nothing further we can add from our standpoint at this time."
A first-round pick in 2002, Wilcox averaged 7.9 points and 4.2 rebounds this past season for the Clippers.
Wilcox led Maryland to the Final Four in each of his two seasons, including an NCAA title in his sophomore year, before declaring for the draft.
And he's charged for transporting a firearm even though he hasn't commited a crime?
Transporting a firearm is a crime in Kali.
Unless you're a crip, a blood, or MS-13.
Anne Arundel County (MD) police are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday in Gambrills. Police say it happened at a home being rented by Washington Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington and San Fransico 49er's player Julian Peterson.
Anne Arundel County police spokesman Lieutenant Joseph Jordan says investigators don't believe Arrington was anywhere near where the trouble took place, although he was present at the party.
A man was shot while trying to break up a fight that happened at the party.
Jordan says police went to the address twice Saturday evening in response to loud music complaints -- just before 8 p-m and again just before midnight.
According to Jordan, during the second visit someone who identified himself as Arrington told an officer he was shutting the party down.
The scuffle and shooting occurred while police were still on the premises making certain people were leaving, but in another area. An eyewitness tells The Associated Press three people were put in handcuffs. Jordan confirmed people were cuffed and questioned but were released. He says police are still investigating.
Are pro teams now issuing firearms?
A guy this rich and popular needs to have a gun to protect himself. This is a tragedy. Where is sharpton? Where is the ACLU? Where is Jesse Jackson?
Rather, transporting a gun is a crime in Maryland. (Well, it's probably a crime in Kali too.)
1. Weaving is PC.
2. Not sure what MD's transport laws are.
He might try to drive a bit more on the careful side when he's transporting or carrying.
I do.
Or he could move to CO, MO, or any of the other 36 states that allow CCW and get a permit like the rest of us.
Transporting a firearm is a habit in Alabama.
Yeah, but carry and transport are two different things. Here in MN, you can legally transport without a permit. If you follow transport rules.
http://www.packing.org
In some states (CA, MD, NJ, NY, IL, CT, HI) you're not supposed to transport one, because you're not supposed to own any, because, gosh darn it, gunz are eeeeeevil, and only for the police and military.
OK. I know that there are gun shops in, oh, say NY.
If ya can't transport, how do ya get 'em home?
FedEx???
;-)
Even if the shooting happened, it still did not give the police the right to charge Wilcox for transporting the firearm. That offense is not a crime according to the 2nd Amendment.
This wasn't in California.
Transporting a firearm may be a crime on the books of several states. But all those laws are violations of the second amendment. What part of "bear" do these folks not understand?
There's another factor as well. The Gun owners Protection act provides protection for folks transporting firearms through second amendment hostile jurisdictions. The firearm must be unloaded and out of reach, and possession (NOT carrying) must be legal at both ends of trip. Not enough information here to know if this case fits that situation though. We don't know where the gun was or if it was unloaded. However many local cops appear unaware of the GOPA. So the guy would be well advised to get a lawyer who is aware of it. However it seems unlikely that the local police would search a cars trunk just based on stopping someone for weaving. More likely they saw it in the passenger compartment, and better than an even bet that it was loaded. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense carry an unloaded firearm, unless one is truly just transporting it from one local to another. Many states, but far from all have similar provisions in state law, such that you can transport an unloaded locked away firearm from you home to the range or to the hunting fields.
You can transport and own a gun in Illinois as long as you have a gun owners card and you transport it properly. Gun and ammo must be seperated by 15 feet, such as gun in the glove box and ammo in the trunk. If you have a compact car you are s.o.l.
If you carry it wrong, you get convicted of a felony, like I did.
The Socialists know that it is not feasible for them to ban guns outright at this point. So they are doing what they can right now, make it difficult like hell for average citizens to own firearms.
Then over time, America will lose its "gun culture" and thus Socialists will be able to seize our firearms for the "children" and we will be passive about it.
