Britain's Prince Harry had blood test to prove Charles was father: newspaper

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's royal family forced the late Princess Diana to blood test her younger son, Prince Harry, to prove he was not the offspring of an affair with an army officer, according to a newspaper report.

Diana, who died in 1997, did not tell Harry why his blood was being taken, the Sun newspaper said in extracts from a book by Simone Simmons, an "energy healer" billed as a former close friend and confidante of the princess.

Senior royals, notably Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip, feared that their son, Prince Charles, who was married to Diana, might not have been the real father of Harry, who was born in September 1984.

Diana had previously had a passionate affair with army officer Major James Hewitt, and there had been rumours that Harry -- who, like Hewitt, has red hair -- was the product of that relationship.

Simmons, whose book "Diana: The Last Word," is being serialised by the tabloid newspaper, claimed she felt Diana should know about the rumours Harry was illegitimate.

"It fell to me to impart the unpleasant news to the princess," the paper quoted her as saying.

Diana, who publicly admitted to her affair with Hewitt in a 1995 television interview, insisted that the dates of her affair with the officer meant he could not possibly be Harry's father, Simmons said.

However, she was pressured to carry out DNA tests on both Harry and his elder brother, Prince William, to prove their paternity, the Sun said in its Wednesday edition.

The tests showed that both princes had been fathered by Charles, the heir to the British throne, who Diana finally divorced in 1996, a year before her death in a Paris car crash.

On Monday, the Sun printed an extract from the book in which Simmons claims Diana had a passionate affair with John F Kennedy Jr, the son of the assassinated US president, who himself died in a plane crash in 1999.

Some other British newspapers have ridiculed Simmons' supposed revelations, saying she was never especially close to Diana and is most likely inventing stories for financial gain.

Watching the hysteria surrounding the Diana funeral, I was convinced the entire country was having a nervous breakdown.

Running after the hearse, throwing flowers at the windscreen......they had all taken leave of their senses.

Diana's brother Charles, in the middle, has red hair, as does her sister Sarah.

Harry strongly resembles her sister Sarah.

Why would anybody have to "force" Harry to have a DNA test? The Queen or Charles could have gotten Harry's doctor to order a test on the QT any time they liked, or taken him to another doctor they trusted, and Diana wouldn't have known a thing about it (neither would this talking-through-her-hat Suzanne person).

Even if Suzanne Simmons is telling the truth about things Diana told her, why should we trust Diana and her tall tales about Harry and JFK, Jr? She was a liar and manipulator.

Sometime around 1776 my family showed they no longer gave a tinkers dam about the royal snoots. We have always named our dogs Duke, Queenie, Prince, King and Princess. I now see why.

I also believe that Diana's brother has red hair. A family trait it would seem. I suppose it's no wonder that Harry's gone off the deep end with his strange taste in costumes and such.

If I was part of that dysfunctional family; I'd probably be a little "touched" as well.

I am afraid I can't post a link to the pics, but I have seen the british soldier that was runored to be the father...And if you ever see the pictures I have of the soldier and Harry shot from the same angle, with similar expressions..you will be shocked by the obvious look of a shared bloodline...

they had all taken leave of their senses...

I felt the same way watching the royal wedding hysteria initially. I do actually feel sorry for all involved. A naive young woman entering what turns out to be a loveless marriage into a dysfunctional family in view oif all the world's media 24/7.

This is why they should abolish the monarchy or turn them more background-ish, ala the cycling royals of Holland, or the Scandinavian royals who were denied permission to let the royal limosine doublepark while picking up palace drycleaning on the grounds that 'if we let the royals do it then everyone else will want to'.

Ojh ye, and Prince Phillip should be permanently gagged.

"Royal family?" Or the Flukes of Hazard? What a low-class soap opera the "royals" are!

Because she, with a sterling Brit pedigree married a creep with a German pedigree and doubtful capacity along with a penchant for the ugly duckling progeny of one of his forefather's mistresses.

Because that schmuck took a virgin young woman and destroyed her as best he could.

Reminds me of the Farkle Family on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Perhaps that red hair came from trusted neighbor Ferd Berfle.
