Worried About Wegmans
The Business Gazette ^ | June 11, 2004 | Steven T. Dennis and Catherine Dolinski

Posted on 06/28/2005 3:07:59 PM PDT by Angry Republican

Montgomery County residents are voting with their wheels, driving over the Potomac River and out past Dulles International Airport for -- a supermarket.

Not just any supermarket, mind you.

Shopping at the new Wegmans in Sterling, Va., may mean driving 20-plus miles across the American Legion Bridge. But the 130,000-square-foot store -- more than twice the size of a typical Giant Food -- has people flocking to its free while-you-shop baby-sitting, its deluxe sushi and hot food bars and its second-floor mezzanine, where there are couches, coffee and seating for 200.

"We were just blown away," said Shelton Binstock of Potomac, who visited the store Sunday with his wife, Bella, at the suggestion of her brother, a food and wine connoisseur from Rockville and a Wegmans regular.

Experts say Wegmans, whose headquarters are in Rochester, N.Y., has re-energized the entire supermarket industry. Montgomery residents have written letters to the company -- and to the Montgomery County Council -- begging for a Wegmans closer to home.

But County Executive Douglas M. Duncan (D) proposes making life tougher for Wegmans, Wal-Mart and any other companies that want to bring megamarkets to Montgomery.

Citing sprawl and traffic concerns, Duncan wants to force big-box retailers to obtain a special zoning exception to zoning laws to build in the county. Any store with more than 10 percent groceries and 120,000 square feet would have to jump through the new hoop, though Duncan would exempt "club" stores such as Sam's Club and Costco, contending they do not generate as much traffic.

Is Wegman's union?

Absolutely not. They are doing everything possible NOT to be unionized.

Having said that, I've been reading about the multiple lawsuits against Wal-Mart by employees. If they don't get their act together, I fear they will be forced to bow to the unions.

one of the bright spots in our little life is the Satruday trip to Wegmans. It is the best supermarket ever!

I'll throw in my 2¢ contribution:

The White Hot from Rochester's own Zweigle's Meats, made of pork, has a widespread following in western New York. It is neither cured nor smoked. The resulting dog is off-white in color with a spicy taste and smooth texture. Split and griddled, this dog is served on a toasted bun and topped with a hot sauce (a meat chili made from a secret Rochester recipe), chopped onions, and any one of a variety of mustards.

OMG, I'm getting hungry!

I'd like to know what a white-hot is, also. Could be a sausage, a wing, or a pepper. hmmmm... wondering

Visit Wegmans official site to see Wegmans' response to being named to Fortune 500. They have been on the list for several years and finally made it to number one in 2005.

I was just moments behind you in answering this.

We've shopped at Wegmans (several of them) here in Syracuse for all of the years that we have lived here. (26) EXCELLENT service, wonderful sales...sadly, no more.

They have now become a caterer to the take out people, and their great sale prices have gone away. They are expanding so much that they can't afford them (?)

However-they are a great corporation-and to be commended for fighting unions every step of the way!

When I go home to visit in Central NY, I go to Wegmans for the Bagels because good bagels are scarce as hen's teeth there in the Finger Lakes region. It is a one stop shopping store, but it has a few points I did not like. It seems they try to cram things into every teeny square inch of the huge store. It seems overcrowded with merchandise but it has a huge variety of everything you could want or need. The prices are comparable with other stores like the P & C and Big M. One great thing is the huge cheese section, and lots of gourmet stuff as well as regular food. I used to go to the store in Auburn a lot,but my sister hates it and Walmart so I have to drag her in the store with me.

Sounds interesting and a like a vast improvement over the standard supermarket. However, I still prefer the local mom & pop corner bakeries/delis for a good bagel or sandwich.

I used to live in Montgomery County.

I predict that as soon as Wegman's passes a large enough envelope to Mr. Duncan, they will have a store there.

Zweigle's hot dogs are outstanding and if you haven't had a white hot, try one soon. I would argue that while similar to Brats they taste quite different. I'm still shocked they are so regionalized.

The Wegmans family has a number of houses on Canandaigua Lake, where I was raised. Its high school, Canandaigua Academy (public) is quite good, and is the alma mater of Stephen Douglas, Brooking Scholar Micheal O'Hanlon (who is a lib who I actually like a bit), and Michael Park, who plays Jack on As the World Turns. It has also turned out probably more Division I football players over the last 20 years than any other school in upstate New York, including two-time Michigan State MVP Scott Greene (Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts).
