A U.S. CH-47 Chinook (search) military transport helicopter crashed in Afghanistan Tuesday, FOX News has learned.

The chopper went down west of Asadabad (search), the capital of Konar (search) province, while bringing reinforcements into an area where U.S. forces have been fighting Taliban rebels.

Update from CNN: (CNN) -- Rescuers were battling darkness to reach eastern Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountains, where a U.S. military helicopter carrying more than a dozen troops went down Tuesday.

The area west of Asadabad, near the Pakistan border, is known for having snow-covered peaks rising as high as 7,000 feet.

The doomed MH-47, a variant of the Army's twin-rotor Chinook transport used by special operations troops, was carrying about 16 military personnel onboard, U.S. military officials said.

Military sources tell CNN an emergency beacon went off when the aircraft went down...

U.S. Chopper Down in Afghanistan The chopper went down west of Asadabad (search), the capital of Konar (search) province, while bringing reinforcements into an area where U.S. forces have been fighting Taliban rebels.

A U.S. military official said 16 personnel were aboard, including three crew members.

It was not immediately known if there had been any casualties, but a request from the Quick Reaction Force, which conducts rescues and recoveries, included a request for extrication from wreckage, which suggested there were survivors.

It was not clear whether the Chinook had crashed by accident or been shot down.

ABC is leading this as I speak, and said, "As the President gets ready to speak tonight" and then is following with this story.

Does anyone know whether it was technical error or a stinger missile that brought it down???

I dont think anyone does yet. But Im leaning against mechanical failure due to this: while bringing reinforcements into an area where U.S. forces have been fighting Taliban rebels.

ABC, like many of the MSM, always have to counter a good news piece with a negative one. And they do it to the Bush administration all the time. Why can't thay just present the news and leave it at that.
Pray for our troops.

"ABC is leading this as I speak, and said, "As the President gets ready to speak tonight" and then is following with this story."

All of the MSM is treating every bad story like this today. The Economy Sucks. The War Sucks. It's a Quagmire. Women and Children Hit Worst! Bush Controls Current Heat Wave!

It's a full court press by the left to smear the President before his speech tonight.

Rush listed about a dozen examples on his show today. The montage they put together of negative questions and conjecturing from Katie Couric to Condi Rice was absolutely appauling!

Extra prayers up for our soldiers, today.

This is terrible. Fortunately, I doubt that Bush is going to do a Jimmy Carter on us. I don't know how many folks on this thread are old enough to remember the night the helicopter crashed in the desert on a run to rescue the Iran hostages, but Jimmuh came on TV, burst into tears, sniveled and basically decided never to do anything ever again to resist Islamic violence. As far as I'm concerned, all he did was say that those men in the helicopter died for nothing.

I don't think Bush is going to do this.

Prayers for the people in the helicopter - maybe there's some hope that they're all right?

U.S. Helicopter Crashes in Afghanistan 7 minutes ago

KABUL, Afghanistan - A U.S. CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter crashed Tuesday while flying troops into eastern Afghanistan, and the fate of those on board was not immediately known, the military said.

The cause of the crash in Kunar province was unclear, a military statement said. Other helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft were deployed to the site, it said.

U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Jerry O'Hara had no other details.

The United States recently launched an offensive against a Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan's Khakeran Valley, seeking to reassert control after a spate of attacks raised fears the war here is worsening. It was not immediately clear whether the helicopter that crashed was involved in that mission.

There has been a string of helicopter crashes in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in late 2001. The most recent was April 6, when 15 U.S. service members and three American civilians were killed in the crash of their CH-47 Chinook near Ghazni city, 80 miles southwest of Kabul, during a sandstorm.

The helicopter was returning to the main U.S. base at Bagram.

"I don't think Bush is going to do this."

I don't think he will, either. In reality, I don't expect him to mention every loss we suffer by name. That's just too "lefty" for me, and I'd lose respect for him if he showed weakness and cried while addressing us. I'll take his terribly misinterpreted "arrogance" any day, over being wishy-washy. Every death is a sad loss, but he's definately one to "stay the course." Good for us and the WOT and good for the Iraqi people.

Iraq and Afghanistan are no quagmires, no matter what those doorknobs Teddy and sKerry say.
