AMD motherboard BIOS help needed
self | 6/28/05 | VIckey

Help needed. My computer won't boot. It steadily declined. First it started shutting down without notice, when I restarted it it started in safe mode and I didn't find anything wrong. Next reboot I got the message CMOS error. The processor speed, date, and time were all listed wrong in the setup. I corrected the time and the computer would not boot to windows. I reaccessed the setup utility and set the settings to match the ones in the user manual under the bios section. Now the computer won't boot to the basic startup (black screen listing processor, ram, etc...). It just beeps once and the screen stays black.

This happened to my previous motherboard and I thought it was fried so we moved my hard drive, burners, and video card to another box with a good motherboard and processor.

Is there any fix?

Did I just fry another motherboard and processor? My husband will never trust me with another computer if I killed another one. Thanks for any help. Vic

Been there done that. I even worked for them for a while. Good product but they have problems too.

Is the computer old...maybe the bios battery is dead.

Without knowing any more about it, I would have to say it sounds like you overheated the CPU and possibly other components.

Did it have good air circulation through the case? The fan outlets weren't CLOSE to a wall were they?

Did you check the motherboard battery?

Probably the battery in your motherboard has gone dead. Remove the old one, it is shiny and flat and about the size of a quarter. Buy a new one and put it in, then go into the BIOS and reset the time, etc. Go into the BIOS for the hard drive settings, set Type to Auto and it should autodetect the drive properly; then you can boot the system.

How do I reset the memory? Pull out the ram and put it back in again?

When I worked on the bios the cpu temp was 89 degrees F and the system temp was 80 degrees F.

First, check your manual for beep codes. I hate to suggest unplugging all peripherals (HD, modem, network card, etc), but that's probably how I'd start the troubleshooting.

Don't forget to check the troubleshooting section in the M/B manual.
