Left-wing Democrats in the House are working on a plan to compel the House Judiciary Committee to launch an impeachment inquiry into what they say are "high crimes and misdemeanors" committed by President Bush in the run-up to the Iraq war.
"If you read the record of the writing of the Constitution, high crimes and misdemeanors had a very particular meaning at the time of the drafting of the Constitution," Rep. Zoe Lofgren said at a forum held by Rep. John Conyers earlier this month.
"It certainly didnt mean lying about sex," she complained, in quotes picked up by the Hill newspaper. "But it might well mean lying to the Congress about a large public purpose such as Iraq." Driving the push for an impeachment inquiry is the so-called Downing Street memo, which Democrats say shows Bush lied about pre-war intelligence.
"We would like to see a member of Congress look into whether or not the president committed impeachable offenses," said John Bonifaz, a constitutional lawyer who co-founded the group AfterDowningStreet.org. "Weve been having that discussion with a number of [congressional] offices," he explained.
Bonifaz has a receptive ear in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who talked about "the case" against Bush last week and praised the Downing Street Memo as "very important" new evidence.
"The case is that going into the war was a grotesque mistake," she told the left wing web site Raw Story. "It was predicated on a lie . . . the intelligence did not support the claim, the threat that they said."
Persuading the House to investigate allegedly impeachable crimes by the president may be a tall order, however, since the GOP-controlled Congress isn't likely to be convinced by arguments from partisan Bush-haters.
Still, Democrats like Rep. Barbara Lee are searching for a way to get the impeachment ball rolling.
A co-chairwoman of the Out of Iraq Caucus and a member of the International Affairs Committee, Lee is circulating a letter calling for a resolution of inquiry. Such a resolution, the Hill explained, would be referred to the committee of jurisdiction, which would then have to vote it down in a set number of days or it would proceed to a floor vote.
Rep. Conyers himself has so far been cautious, at least in public. "My inclination at this time is not to do something like [impeachment]," Conyers told The Hill - explaining instead that he wants to investigate further.
eeeEEYYYAAWWWNNnnnn
But if President Bush dare nominate someone who actually wants to apply the meaning at the drafting of the Constitution, we will fillibuster him as an extremist.
Bttt
The Communists in the DNC need to MoveOn. They lost in 2000, they lost in 2002 and they lost again in 2004. They are losers. There are still too many Americans running around in this country for the Communists to take it over.
And .. the media didn't cover their little "impeachment party" when they held it a few weeks ago. In fact there were a few media who actually made fun of them.
There are not enough votes in the House to accomplish their goal .. so this attack is just to smear the President, i.e., ALL REPUBLICANS.
They better check the papers today .. the American public is STILL IN FAVOR OF THE WAR - the American public gets it - maybe they don't like all the killing - WHO DOES - but I believe the public is more in touch with the President and the war than the media is; which ticks the media off.
The lie came from Clintoon appointed CIA POS!
I just told my husband about this, and his reaction was the same as mine. If these fools try this, it will tear this country apart.
A co-chairwoman of the Out of Iraq Caucus
More like the 'Out of Orbit Caucus'.
LOL or Out of Iraq Circus
It's the usual suspects...John "Commie" Conyers, Barbara "I'm the only member of Congress to vote against military action in Afghanistan" Lee, Zoe Lofgren, Nancy "Bela" Pelosi. They're pathetic socialists, period. It's disgraceful they get voted into office in the first place.
The liberal hatred is so intense that they daily dump on the U.S., the military and Dubya and then wipe their collective behinds with the American flag. (Figurtively speaking)
They proudly declare that it is their constitutional right to engage in this behavior, which they proudly call dissent. Their blindness to the harm it does our country and servicemen in time of war will continue to doom their electoral chances. They are telling American that the "Weak on Defense" issue is alive and will cost Democrats dearly.
They continue to fail to see how their actions and rhetoric make them very suceptible to the Flag Burning Ammendment. That is why Republicans routinely propose this Ammendment! In a normal world where both parties actually love their country and institutions this Ammendment would not have any downside consequences for either party and would be deemed totally unneccesary. They are pathetic and will pay dearly for their hatred, especially in the 2006 elections.

Nutbags... but they have an audience... sigh.

These liberal leftists demoncRATS can't stand the thought that their demoncRAT prez has the singular title of being the impeached prez. They're trying to find a way to have the pubs share the title. They're so transparent.
Conyers is a good name for him - he's a con-man and any California Democrat really shouldn't be taken all that seriously either.
In other words, there's no story here.
The whole piece is about some reporter at 'The Hill' filling up space.
