What rights do parents have over their children? The issue has come front and center in one Northern California school district, which has begun dispensing birth control to students without the consent of parents.
The Elsie Allen High School clinic was granted the okay to proceed prescribing and distributing contraceptives -- at little to no cost to students within the entire Santa Rosa City School District.
According to the California Teen Health website, children as young as fourteen, now have unlimited access to condoms, birth control patches, oral and intravenous contraceptives, and even the morning after pill.
Only Birth Control Needs No Consent
Interestingly enough, the Santa Rosa policy stipulates that any non-birth control related medications may only be administered upon consent of the parent, and even then, a clinician may need to be notified.
The policy was instituted in response to the astronomical pregnancy rate among girls at the Elsie Allen High School. According to CNS News, the pregnancy rate at the school is 132 per 1000.

Since most religions consider sex outside of marriage to be against the doctrines of their faith, could a lawsuit be filed on 'Church and State' grounds? By that I would argue that the school is specifically countering religious beliefs, on sex outside of marriage, to such an extent (via dispensing birth control) that they are in fact promoting action which is offensive to the Church?
I know it is weak, but people a lot smarter then I am, might be able to use this as a basis to file a lawsuit, gain adverse publicity against Santa Rosa SD, and make them back down. The only analogy I can think of would be something like free ham sandwiches to all students at lunch. Ham is offensive to some, so this would not be done.
Could this illogic be extended to this?
Another way to go is "consent laws". I just read that the age of consent in CA is 18. That includes between adults and minors and between two minors.
The question is: Why isn't a case made that schools are helping children to break that law?
We will teach you how to kill your babies in school today.
Oh yes, Mr. President, you bet your ass that "No Child Shall Be Left Behind" because we flush them down the toilet.
That's gonna make Planned Parenthood really mad! They hate competition.
What happened to "Drug Free Zone"? Doesn't it just give you a safe fuzzy feeling knowing that educational establishment is dealing in drugs?
later pingout.
Oh yeah, and your teen can get suspended for giving her friend a Tylenol. Makes a lot of sense to me.
