The other stories I saw didn't have the official vote totals. I guess the BBC is doing this around the world for a greatest vote to select an overall champ.

Winston Churchill won in the UK.

I tend to agree, President Reagan was the best for everyone in society.

George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Elvis Presely, Oprah Winfrey and Franklin D. Roosevelt rounded out the top ten.

So sad that any of those should be in the top 10. Personally, I can't decide between Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.

Shows the state of American education. George Washingotn was in a class of his own. Ronaldus Maximus is right up there, though, after Lincoln perhaps.

You can make a strong case for those two indeed. Eisenhower also should have been in the top 10, IMO.

Ditto. Without Washinton, Reagan would have been a British subject.

"Former US President Ronald Wilson Reagan has been nominated the 'Greatest American' ever."

Maybe a matter of which side of the ocean you're on but it sounds like Reagan not only was "nominated" but he also won the contest.

Another clue as to how this will spin...

"President George Washington was voted the fourth most popular American with 17.7 percent of the nominations. Ben Franklin came in fifth with 14.9 percent of the votes."

"Most popular" or "Greatest American"? Well, which is it? Look for these subtle changes coming soon to the Today Show script.

I'm willing to bet that many of the people voting didn't have a clue as to who Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson were though.

I know Eisenhower, Eisenhower was a friend of mine......LOL

Actually Eisenhower was known as a do nothing president.

Spent inordinate amount of time on the golf course and let America recover from the war with little or no interference from the government.

Which was a good thing! But them's the facts.

I was thinking more about what Ike did before he became president...perhaps the memory of the voters were still focused on his presidency.
