GERHARD'S GROVEL

By RALPH PETERS --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

June 27, 2005 -- IN the bitter winter of 1077, Kaiser Heinrich IV, a vicious German politico, pursued the pope to a mountain castle to beg him to lift his excommunication. The pope let the emperor wait barefoot in the courtyard for three days before granting an audience. When Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder visits the White House today, our president should at least keep him waiting three hours. Extend that morning meeting with the Deputy Plumber's Guild of Peoria. Presidents have to prioritize.

Bush won't be rude, of course. Besides, he's got more on his schedule than a burnt-out German hack — he's got to get the chancellor in and out. It'll be enough to watch Schroeder squirm as he crawls to the Oval Office, begging to be taken seriously again.

I love this editorial. The author has almost as much dislike for france and germany as I do. His phrase, "Here comes the big bratworst" expresses my attitude perfectly.

"The author has almost as much dislike for france and germany as I do."

You certainly know how the whole story ended as well.

The vicious german politico came back to Rome seven years
later, threw the offending pope out of office and was
crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The pope retreated
to Salerno with a few followers, was freed by the French
and died one year later, powerless.

Peters patchwork knowledge of history is a dual use weapon
indeed.
