Considering half the (then) country is still angry over Lincoln's war of northern aggression do you *really* think he'd be a winner. What he did may have 'saved' the Union but it was probably illegal and certainly had very disturbing moral implications. The Union became just like the Eagle's Hotel California: you can check in but you can never leave.

It wasn't because Reagan was recent.

It's a popularity contest. So, from that perspective, it's nice Reagan and Bush topped Clinton and FDR, and that Washington, Lincoln and even Franklin made the list.

IMO, #1 and #2 can be argued either Lincoln or Washington though. No acceptable substitutes.

Lincoln prevented our nation from probably having 200 or 300 states. The south would have come back into the Union, once allowances were made for states rights over federal dominion. Other countries would have joined, if they knew that they could get out - albeit, with difficulty, if they were badly treated. by the other nations.

The middle of the country is going to be treated badly someday by the dominate urban area. Food will be the catalyst.

Lincoln is 10x the American Reagan was..

With malice toward none, each was special for his time. The magnitude of the accomplishments of each is incalculable. For Lincoln, he did more than crush the rebellion which would have doomed our nation to roughly half its historic potentiality. He preserved the union and forestalled what would have been a perpetual, heated rivalry.
For Reagan, he struggled against a massive media animus and a fellow-travelling opposition party to crush the communist menace and the ominous threat of global thermonuclear war. Hard to compare, but, due to the sheer magnitude and universality of the stakes, I voted for Reagan.
With charity for all.

Amen to that. Lincoln got us through the civil war, put race and sex behind us as impediments to true liberty, and technically, since he was born after America was founded, surpasses Washington, who really did most of his works before America existed, as did Franklin. the question should have been "Who meant the most to America". Without Lincoln there would still be America.....and the Confederacy. No contest.

Abraham Lincoln?

Tell me this. Where in the US Constitution does it say a State cannot leave? How Constitutional was the War between the States?
