I am a former producer for WMAL (2000 - 2002) having won an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2001. The story with Bill Press is fascinating. He was always good on TV (Crossfire) and the radio; sharp, witty, and funny.
Yet his time at WMAL as a morning show host was a failure. Why? Because of the audience. Conservatives will listen to conservatives or "middle-of-the-roaders" not liberals.
Press is a liberal and makes no bones about it. This was a problem back then but I think national radio provides him the opportunity to do whatever show he wants however he wants. Very interesting!
I turned my radio off of WMAL shortly after Press got the job - and listened instead to CSPAN Radio.
I was thrilled to hear the news when the fool left WMAL.
Fred Grandy is a pretty good guy. He and Andy Parks work well together, and have good senses of humor.
I love Michael Graham's show, but don't often get to listen to him. Rush is the best, of course. Hannity is OK, but I prefer Michael Graham. Chris Core is OK, too; but I'd rather listen to Michael Graham on my drive home. Chris whines and wrings his hands a little too much for my liking.
And if WMAL would get Laura Ingraham's show (and drop Chris Core) I'd be happy as can be with the Andy/Grandy Show, Ingraham, Rush, Hannity (so-so) and Graham as their daily lineup.
You can keep Bill Press.
Put him on Air America, or whatever that sorry lefty/liberal radio network is called.
Just one (Takoma Park, MD Native) gal's opinion.

If only Monica had had the same instincts...
