Cruise Clashes With Lauer on 'Today' Show
Associated Press ^ | June 24, 2005 | Staff

Tom Cruise criticized NBC "Today" show host Matt Lauer on Friday when Lauer mentioned Cruise's earlier criticism of Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants. Cruise told Lauer he didn't know what he was talking about. "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do," Cruise said.

The interview became more heated when Lauer, who said he knew people who had been helped by the attention-deficit disorder drug Ritalin, asked Cruise about the effects of the drug.

"Matt, Matt, you don't even — you're glib," Cruise responded. "You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That's what I've done."

He is really ruining the box office for War Of The World's. Everyone is talking about him, not the movie.

Boy, I tell you what. Before you go throwing around my name like that and attributing such heartless power to me . . .

Oh, wait, you said XenU, not XenA.

My bad.

I have no desire to see the movie, and I'd been looking forward to seeing it. Now I don't think that I'd be able to suspend disbelief long enough to buy TC as the hero in the movie or even to enjoy the film at all.

I wanted to see it to. Guess I'll wait cause I have no desire to fund his insanty tour ... or help get him his next one.

There's nothing wrong with him throwing his own career down the crapper.

His crazy ass will wind up locked up in the nuthouse, not before Katie Holmes dumps him like a trashbag.

He and Nicole don't bat for the same team.

Nicole plays on the same team you do.*

*This assumes you're a guy. If you're a girl, strike that and reverse it.

The Superficials great, love that site/blog. I'm starting to wonder if Pumps (our nickname for Tom, not regarding his fists) has taken over the reigns of the whole shebang.

More like the War of Mental Midgets.

I would pay to see him and travolta battle in a 'cage match' to death for control of the whole movement. Maybe a pay-per-view special?

I can't say that I know much about Scientology (isn't that their point), but aside from that, I don't agree with the attacks on Cruise.

I interpret his point to be that taking drugs to alter your chemical composition isn't exactly the best way to deal with issues in life. Whether he's right or wrong about post-partem, I don't know why conservatives (like FReepers) would want to dismiss his criticism of drug dependency.

Heck, he told Matt that Matt doesn't understand how the studies promoting drug dependency were conducted. Why is that fundamental claim so different than conservatives saying the studies about global warming are agenda-driven and flawed? Most "studies" and "surveys" are conducted for the purpose of proving a proposed question. I think it is only intellectually honest to consider the methodology of studies which are used to encourage drug dependency in our society.

Don't any of you wonder about the impact widespread Ritalin, etc. use is having in our society? I think he's saying "enough already. We need to move away from this stuff." I'm no scientist but I agree with him.

From what I've read about the ending of the movie, it sounds like it's probably sound strategy to have people talking about Cruise and not the movie.

If Tom is against Ritalin, then I agree with Tom.

Read the transcripts of the interview.

Both boobs are dumb as dirt.

I'm surprised either one tied his shoelaces.

Thank you for helping!

I guess the knee-jerk tour has snowballed to the point of losing sight of common sense.

And laugh if you want, but once Xenu is freed from his electronic mountain trap and order is restored to the Galactic Confederation, (an alliance of 76 planets founded 95 million years ago) you’re gonna feel pretty silly. No offense all of you who don't believe in Xenu, but you're kinda makin an ass out of yourself.

You don't even know who Xenu is. If you start talking about the Galactic Confederation, you have to evaluate and read the Anu'udrian Treaty on how they came up with these alliances, TheOtherOne, OK. That's what I've done.
