Canadians are becoming even more negative about Americans, viewing them as "rude, greedy and violent," suggests a survey released yesterday.
And while most Canadians agreed Americans are inventive and hardworking, less than half called them honest, said the Pew Research Center poll, which charted some minor improvements in a major global image problem that spiked after President George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq in 2003.
But the survey, conducted among nearly 17,000 people this spring in the U.S. and 15 other countries, suggested America remains "broadly disliked" in 10 of them and regard for Americans is going down, Pew director Andrew Kohut said.
"The magnitude of America's image problem is such that even popular U.S. policies have done little to repair it," the report said.
"President George W. Bush's calls for greater democracy in the Middle East and U.S. aid for tsunami victims in Asia were well-received in many countries but only in Indonesia, India and Russia has there been significant improvement in overall opinions of the U.S."
Disclosures about American soldiers abusing detainees in the war on terror have added fuel to tensions with the Muslim world and none of the countries surveyed, including the U.S., agreed the toppling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq made the world a safer place.
And a low opinion of Bush was a key issue among those with unfavourable ratings of the U.S., with 54% of Canadians saying he's the problem, down from 60% in 2003.
Americans seem to know all about their public relations crisis. Only 24% reported thinking their country is well-liked around the world.
That's in marked contrast to the 94% of Canadians who said other countries have a positive view of Canada.
Overall, traditional American allies like Canada and Britain rated countries like France, Germany and Japan much higher than the U.S. Even China seemed to have a better image than the U.S. among Europeans.
A favourable opinion of America in Canada slipped to 59% in 2005 from 72% in 2002, the first year the study was conducted by the independent group.
Study co-chairman Madeleine Albright, who served as U.S. secretary of state under Bill Clinton, attributed some of the bad reviews to the simple fact that America is the world's lone superpower.
"It's not easy being America. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't."
The countries surveyed include the U.S., Spain, Germany, Netherlands, France, Pakistan, Britain, Canada, Lebanon, Turkey, Indonesia, India, Jordan, China, Poland and Russia.
Well they're simply wrong. We are a kinder, gentler, compassionate culture of life.
I view them as fat, drunk, and stupid. Yet you don't see Canadian newspapers printing stories that say "Americans view Canadians as fat, drunk and stupid".
Even though fat, drunk, and stupid is now way to go through life.
Why don't they do a poll asking Americans, "What is our view of Canadians?"
Geez, That's how I view Candian Snowbirds that move to Florida during the winter months.
Canadian businessmen are well regarded as having not particularly high ethical standards.
Once again .... who gives a rat's a$$ what these other countries think of us!
Exactly. How often do we get polled asking how we view Canadians? Never. It's because they are totally irrelevant.
In the words of our diplomat to the UN a la South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.
F*** Canada!
Very funny. The Canadians think we're rude? What about all those Canadian tourists who come to New England every summer - refusing to leave tips at restaurants. Now that's rude!
"Hey, Canada, shut up and hand over your oil, or we'll beat you up." ;)
Yes, well with any luck we can watch as China is unindated with immigrants willing to risk it all for a better way of life.
Watch as Canadians beat a path to Peking's door.
Wish that we had taken them when we had the chance....
"Geez, That's how I view Candian Snowbirds that move to Florida during the winter months."
We mustn't forget cheap and very snooty! Eh?
Where's Canada?
ROFLOL
Canada who?
That pretty much captures the essence of Canadian-ness.
"Sticks and Stones..." Who cares what they think?
AMERICAN AND DAMNED PROUD OF IT! That's why we live here and not there.
