One of the most humiliating moments of Oprah's life

French luxury store Hermes has apologised to American television celebrity Oprah Winfrey for turning her away from one of its Paris boutiques last week, saying when she came knocking the store was closed for a public relations event.

The U.S. talk show host and "an entourage" unsuccessfully tried to enter a Hermes boutique on the posh Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore at 6:45 p.m. on June 14, Hermes said in a statement.

"People were in the store and they were shopping. Oprah was at the door and she was not allowed into the store," said Gayle King, a friend of Winfrey who witnessed the incident, to American television program Entertainment Tonight. "Oprah describes it herself as 'one of the most humiliating moments of her life.'"

"She's really OK. Her position is, 'I will shop where people appreciate my business, and I don't believe that any longer includes Hermes,'" King said.

Normal closing time is 6:30 p.m., though high-end shops are known to make exceptions for celebrities. On that particular night, however, ``a private public relations event was being prepared inside,'' the Hermes statement said.

"Hermes regrets not having been able to welcome Madame Oprah Winfrey and the people accompanying her to give them all the attention and service that Hermes is committed to giving each of its clients in the world," said the statement released Tuesday. "Hermes expresses its sincere regrets for any misunderstanding that these circumstances could have caused."

O my Gawd; Didnt they realise Oprah and Elvis dont have to worry about shopping after closing time? What in the hell is happening in this world when a first class celebrity like Oprah is turned away after closing hours. Didnt they see she had an entourage? It was absolutely "horrible" that her "entourage" saw her turned away. After all she is a powerful woman.

What a boatload. These people have egoes that need adjustment. Traveling in entourages and expecting stores to let them in 24 hours a day, Who the **** do they think they are? Entourage = butt kissers and hangers on.

Talk about shallow! We must treat blacks pretty well in this country if being denied access to $6500 bags at Hermes is one of "the most humiliating moments" of Oprah's life. And contrary to her sob story, the staff said there was a private event going on at Hermes after hours. Oprah, being queen because she's rich, believed she was entitled to go in and shop during the event, betraying an utter lack of class. Obviously, she is clueless as to how this looks to the rest of us.

My first thought on reading this in re Hermes and Oprah, yesterday -- was "fashion". Oprah doesn't quite fit the high-fashion image and because of her "pedestrian" weight issues. This is not a "high-fashion" ideal to speak of openly.

But I had another thought. Didn't Oprah just speak happily and proudly about her "zulu" ancestry? Perhaps this is just "too close" to France, in re Rwanda? Don't anyone try to tell me "high fashion" doesn't engage in politics..

Did you hear we sold M-1-A-1 tanks to the French with faulty transmission?

They wanted them because only reverse works.
