WASHINGTON - Big Bird and National Public Radio won a reprieve Thursday as the House restored $100 million that had been proposed as a budget cut for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

The 284-140 vote demonstrated the enduring political strength of public broadcasting, whose supporters rallied behind popular programs such as “Sesame Street,” “Postcards From Buster” and “The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer.”

The Public Broadcasting Service undertook a high-profile campaign to rescind the proposed cut. Lawmakers were flooded with letters and phone calls.

Well lets review.Today the supreme court ruled that the goverment owns your home and can evict you anytime it feels like and now the majority republican congress decided that you will own pbs whether you want to or not becasue after all that is a small goverment conservative philosophy.

I have a question for everyone of you republicans. Are you niave people going to drink the kool aid and throw your vote away again in 2006 and 2008?Or are you going to register and vote for the only political party that will eliminate all gun laws all drug laws all illegal (regardless of what the supreme court that said all blacks are furniture in the dred scott case rules )private property land grabs and all public funding for pbs ?

if you want more info on what that party is go to www.lp.org

as I just BECAME a Republican, yes I will. However, the votes will not be thrown away.

I will, at least, have someone who represents me 95% of the time in the House....

since you are an LP'er, you won't understand. But quitting the GOP now will only help the Dems. And guess what? Madame Hillary IS running whether you like it or not.

If you want more conservative candidates you have to work to get them. But if you want to take 1 or 2% of the electorate away, you would have AlGore as your President right now. This country has a 2 party mindset. Sorry guys, I will be staying with the GOP for the foreseeable future and we will see who comes out on top.

Please discuss the Libertarian view on abortion and border control so that I can make this critical decision.

My view is public broadcasting should be abolished. I don't see any warrant in the Constitution for the federal government to run a TV company. But as today's vote demonstrates, its hard to get rid of an entitlement once its been established.

:)

As I was only 12 and 16 when those elections happened....

Hillary WANTS the GOP to shred. The Dems are in more disarray EVERY single day. One good push (06 elections) and the Dems may fracture all together.

In light of this decision on funding, I can imagine NPR's lead news story:

"Some sources are saying that corrupt, spineless Republicans voted to continue funding PBS only in an effort to divert attention from a soon-to-be-revealed scandal involving Dick Cheney and Halliburton. Moderate Democrat Nancy Pelosi had this to say: "Die Capitalist Pigs!!" while rightwing extremist John McCain said this: "Government funding of news sources friendly to the Democrat party is just good common sense.""

Ross was at least fun to watch.

He had a Voodoo Stick.

You're right about Hillary.

That woman scares the pee out of me.

The SC eliminates private property rights. The SC says scumbags have to have lawyers even if they want to plead quilty. Rumsfeld and Abazaid have to listen to lectures from scumbags like Fat Kennedy, Hitlery and Lindsey Graham while the nation is at war against fanatics who want to kill every man, woman and child in the U.S. And now this. Well ain't that the cherry on top of the sundae!!

You'll forgive me now. I have to go blow a gasket.

I'm with you Mike. Libertarians are just a little too over the edge for me........I'd sooner burn in hell than vote for a Demonrat so I'll stick with the Republicans until we can get a viable 3rd party that adheres to the Constitution, is for smaller, less intrusive government and lower taxes.

I am an independent because I don't think the Republicans do enough to stop abortion. It is my Catholic faith that prevents me from joining a party that talks the talk but won't walk the walk.
That being said I always vote Republican. By this point in time I can not see voting for any Dem the way I cannot see denying my faith. But I saw what a third party candidate did to the elections of Clinton. Without Perot we never would have had that slime. (China never would have had ICBM's and a manned space program either.)
See the tag line? It is now more true than ever.

I think the supportive phone calls and letters spoke volumes on how Americans feel about PBS.
