Lviv Municipal Council Decides To Open Memorial To Polish And Ukrainian Soldiers On June 24

Monday, June 13 2005

The Lviv municipal council has set June 24 as the date for opening a memorial to soldiers of the Ukrainian Halychyna Army and Polish soldiers buried at Lviv's Lychakivske cemetery during the 1918-1920 period.

Out of the Lviv municipal council's 90 deputies, 66 voted in favor of this decision.

The Lviv municipal council invited President Viktor Yuschenko and Poland's President Aleksander Kwasniewski to attend the opening ceremony.

The Lviv municipal council also amended its decision No. 770 of September 2000 to allow restoration of gravestones at the burial sites of French marines and American pilots with the following inscription in the Polish language: "To the French Citizens Who Died Fighting for Poland in the 1919-1920 Period" and "To the Americans Who Died Fighting for Poland in the 1919-1920 Period" as well as to install the relevant information plates in the Ukrainian language.

The Lviv municipal council also decided to install a slab bearing the words "Here Lies a Soldier who Died for the Fatherland" at the central section of the burial sites.

The Lviv municipal council also considers it unacceptable to erect sculptures, architectural elements, and military symbols not authorized by the Lviv municipal council.

The council also decided to install a plate bearing the words "Here Lie the Ukrainian and Polish Soldiers who Died during the Ukrainian-Polish War of 1918-1919" at the entrance to the memorial.

The Lviv municipal council's decision will come into force after implementation of Section 7 of the protocol of the June 7 meeting of the representatives of the presidents of Ukraine, which deals with perpetuation of the burial sites of the Ukrainians who tragically died in the village of Pawlokom (Poland) in the March 2-3 period of 1945.

The Lviv municipal council decided to place Lviv's Mayor Liubomyr Buniak in charge of implementation of the decision.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine and Poland have agreed the ceremonial a solemn opening and consecration of the Polish military memorial and graves of warriors of the Ukrainian Halychyna Army at the Lychakivske cemetery in Lviv on June 24.

Yuschenko promised to resolve the issue of opening of a memorial at the burial sites of Polish soldiers at the Lychakivske cemetery by May.

The cemetery where Polish participants in the Ukrainian-Polish war of 1918-1919 are buried was renovated in 1999, but was not officially opened because of disagreements over how to describe those interred there.

That's a good sign. When I see respect for the dead, I'm encouraged. Ukraine had quite a mixed record of respect for the dead after becoming independent. However, this event is encouraging.
