New treatments, better detection and knowledge of prevention has doctors and researchers more hopeful than ever before

About 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease and it is predicted to strike 14 million by 2050 as the population ages. Currently there are treatments available that target the symptoms, but one experimental drug is actually working to slow the underlying disease process. NBC's Mark Mullen reports, and Dr. Giselle Wolf-Klein of the Parker Geriatric Institute shares information on other treatments, early detection and prevention.

I hope not. One of the cruelest diseases out there.

Low Homocysteine levels are important for the prevention of any plaque accumulation whether cardiovascular or neurological.

Since my bypass surgery in 2000, I've taken a daily regimen of 800mcg folic acid, 400mcg B12 and 25mg B6, and I'm happy to report my homocysteine level quickly was made normal (after the first month of taking the vitamins.

I encourage everyone to discuss this vitamin regimen with their family doctor or specialist.

Thanks for the thread and the ping, PAL.

On occasion, I wonder if my senior moments are an early signal. :)

Hope they find a cure soon.

Are there many diseases that do not exist anymore?

My dad who is fighting cancer has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. What more could happen to him (sigh)!

In a way it is--ALS kills you quicker - two to three years, but Alzheimer's takes ten years. In a strange way, it seems to guarantee a long (if helpless) life. It takes a toll even more on the caregivers.

A man at my church who was caretaker for his wife firmly said TEN years and that's kind of held true for the admittedly non-scientific study I've taken.

Other brain related diseases: Parkinson's, MS, and the grand-daddy of them all: Huntington's. The curse of Huntington's is that, while there MAY be heredity factors in those other diseases, Huntington's almost guarantees that children of sufferers (at least half of them) will get the disease.

I pray every day for the research into these brain-related diseases that seem to be growing like crazy.

Who ever heard of ALS until Lou Gehrig...now I've known personally 4 sufferers (3 of them dead now)

If I understand your question I would say AIDS, cancer, and diabetes to name 3, but there are many many more. There are diseases that are even hard to identify, let alone cure. I hope none of us get any of them.

As the (we) boomers age, I thought this might be good info to pass along.

That's about right .....

Now, what was it that I'm looking for. Or Why was I looking for this thing.

Hmmm .... Am I answering your question or PAL's? :)

Sorry, it was worded poorly. Are there many diseases that were prevalent in the past, that have been eradicated?

You're asking the wrong person. I'm not an expert on anything, including those stats.
