Give me a few minutes with him and I'll give him something to really cry about.
Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line, the Illinois Democrat said. To them I extend my heartfelt apologies.
His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks.
translation: Censure and latest polls say I lost 632,142 votes over my bone head remarks.

Earlier in the day, however, Daley came down hard on his friend.
"I think it is a disgrace," the mayor declared when asked about Durbin's comments last week. "He is a good friend of mine, but I think it is a disgrace to say that any man or woman in the military acts like that."
Daley's son, Patrick, recently enlisted in the U.S. Army and now is in training.
"I believe our men and women in the military have a lot of common sense and passion and heart," the mayor said.
`So disrespectful'
"Read the history of the Holocaust," Daley said. "Nothing can compare with the Holocaust. . . . It is so disrespectful for all the victims of the Holocaust. You are talking about 6 million people intentionally killed. . . .
"How many did [Stalin] kill?" Daley asked rhetorically. "Twenty-two million. Then you take what took place in Cambodia, and we are trying to [compare] incidents in Guantanamo Bay, where nobody has been killed, no one has been seriously injured, to that?"

Durbin yields to onslaught, apologizes in full

He only cried because he thinks he may have lost the Jewish VOTE!
Notice he doesn't first apologize to our men and women in uniform but to the victims of the Holocaust:
"Mr. President, it is very clear that even though I thought I had said something that clarified the situation, to many people it was still unclear. I'm sorry if anything that I said caused any offense or pain to those who have such bitter memories of the Holocaust, the greatest moral tragedy of our time. Nothing, nothing should ever be said to demean or diminish that moral tragedy."
"I'm also sorry if anything I said in any way cast a negative light on our fine men and women in the military. I went to Iraq just a few months ago with Senator Harry Reid and a bipartisan Senate delegation. When you look in the eyes of the soldiers you see your son and daughter. They are the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them."
"Some may believe that my remarks crossed line. To them, I extend my heartfelt apologies."

Durbin's statement
The following statement was released by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin's office June 21, 2005, and is presented here without editing.

If Durbin had come right out and apologized after he was first criticized then... maybe his apology would have been sincere. But his apology was forced by the Democrats who are trying to distance themselves from this political disaster. We know that he did not apologize because of the Republicans. So the apology was forced.
I don't buy it and I sent off my flaming e-mail letting him know that I want him gone from ever making any decision that would put our Armed Forces in harms way. I want him removed from office period. I sent the e-mail via: http://durbin.senate.gov/contact.cfm

DURBINS JOKE WHATS THE PROBLEM HERE?
April 21, 2005
My colleague and sometime golf partner Rudy Bushs story today reports that Sen. Dick Durbin is under fire for a joke he told Wednesday at the dedication of the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield:
Durbin's gaffe came as he related an old yarn that the late Chicago federal Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz often told about how his Jewish immigrant parents came to give him Lincoln's name. They had presumed the 16th president was Jewish, Marovitz used to say, because his name was Abraham and he was shot in the temple.
