Today, President Bush met with Vietnamese Prime Minister, Phan Van Khai in the Oval Office. Khai is visiting Washington to talk with the President about helping Vietnam join the World Trade Organization. It is the first such visit of a Vietnamese leader since the end of the war. He then addressed the Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting via satellite (the text of which is given here ).

The President also met with Republican leaders in the White House at a luncheon, accepting a compromise on Social Security, and refusing to back down on the nomination of John Bolton, urging Bill Frist to continue pushing for an up or down vote for Bolton.

This afternoon, the President attended the swearing in ceremony of Dr. Ben S. Bernanke as new Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Building in the White House complex.

In Baltimore we still say "pocketbook" for purse/bag/etc.

I grew up in DC and my people were from the Richmond, VA area. We all say pocketbook. Nowadays, I use purse, pocketbook, and handbag (not just 'bag,' that's my backpack) interchangably.

After the fall of Siagon over 100,000 were brought here
to San Diego and thousands more followed.
Some neighborhoods have stores in their language.
Most are big with education unlike the folks south of me.
Lot of V.N. Drs.

Still had to see todays visitor. This was the major
stageing area for the V.N.war. I saw dozens of the
POWs when they came back. On one occasion was standing by a few of the first returned and with them was Adm. McCain
the father of yep.

So maybe pocketbook is east coast.

I grew up hearing it, so I don't know if Mom was unique in saying it as a native New Englander, and if others didn't use it.

I've always called it a purse.

That's sort of like the one of the President I posted.......up in the corner.

At least the VP was not in 'an undisclosed' location today. :o)

And I loved what he said about Gitmo! He gets to be the bulldog of the administration.........and I'm guessing he loves it!

Well, that's true here too, but I carry what I call a wallet in my purse. It's where the money and pictures of my kids are............and more than a few credit cards!

So far we have pocketbook users from Richmond to Rhode Island. This is a very instructive thread.

I know I have gotten some very funny looks from people when I have used that word in some parts of the [English-speaking] world.

Hey Ohio,

The boy played well tonight. 2 hits, 2 stolen bases, some excellent plays at 2nd, but we couldn't pull it out. Sigh....

He went back to the beach tonight,(prayers, please for a safe drive) next game - doubleheader - on Sunday.

Did your daughter graduate yet? I probably missed the whole thing. I remember well your party for Eric when he graduated - boy, doesn't THAT seem like ages ago. Did you (or can you) say where she is heading to college?

He definitely loves being the guy that gets to say what he (and the President) REALLY think.

I wonder if, after he leaves office in 2008, the President will go back to being more direct in speech? I'll bet he's going to like not having to be such a diplomat, when he's such an honest, straightforward guy by nature.

No, snugs, my dear. You have never had a milkshake at McDonalds. You had an imitation milkshake which has become most unfortunately common in the U.S. What you had was some sort of thick custardy stuff with chocolate in it. YECH! It comes out of a machine already mixed. Now, a REAL milkshake is real milk, ice cream and chocolate, vanilla or strawberry,
which is put into a metal container and then into a milkshake maker which acts like an egg beater and stirs it up. I had one last evening at my favorite hamburger place on the Niagara River. DOUBLE YUM.

By the way, have you ever heard of this English name for a handbag? Reticule? When I was a child, I overheard my mother reminding her aunt that they used to call it that.

Yes........she graduated on June 5th (along with a zillion others in this state), and she gave a barnburner speech where she preached the Gospel of Christ's love to her class. It was amazing!

I can say this much..........she's going to California to college! In August, my closest child (which happens to be Eric) will be 800 miles away from me!!

I cry every now and again just thinking about it.........

Congratulate son on an awesome game.........even if the team came up short. Don't our kids make us proud?? :o)

no one talks like that in my part(s) of Ohio

It is a carry over of the first people in the area.
Part of Ohio was The Virginia Military Dist.
Settled by those from the Augusta,Bath, and Allegheny
cos of Virginia in 1820s on and the Congress lands.
I have copys of deeds signed by Prez Jackson.
The Cleveland area was the Connecticut Fire Land.
Given to some who were burned out in Conn during the
Rev. War. A Rev. War 5th great grandfather later came to
Greene Co. Ohio before 1811.
Most of my relatives are from the Allen and Auglaize Co
area still there since early 1830s Some also from
Shelby and Clinton Cos.
But as I mentioned it is old old Ohio accient. Many
relatives that are grads of Ohio St. Univ and other univs
still have the accient.

That would be a wallet, or changepurse as far as I know. Anyone have any other names for it?

Well, a wallet has to be able to hold bills, credit cards, and pictures of the kids.;-)

A coin purse is strictly for coins. I have one that opens by squeezing the sides, and it pops open.
