The man from Mexico City said he came from Farmingville looking for work so he could give his wife and two children a better life back home.
Yesterday, he found himself homeless in the land that was supposed to fuel his dream. He was among dozens of Mexican day laborers evicted from 33 Woodmont Place in a crackdown on overcrowded housing by authorities.
"We're going to sleep in the street," the man, shaken by the eviction and unwilling to give his name, said in Spanish. Another worker, Francisco Penelopez, 27, summed up the immigrants' grim mood when he said, "This isn't the American dream. It's the American nightmare.

"Suffolk County is becoming a war zone on immigrants," said Darren Sandow of the Jericho-based Unitarian Universalist Fund. [Suffolk County Executive Steve] Levy's move "is a cheap gimmick used to get votes. The unfortunate thing is that humans are the pawns."
Latino activist the Rev. Allen Ramirez of Brookville Reformed Church, who was trying to help the men find a place to sleep last night, said, "Mr. Levy has simply started his own personal campaign of ethnic cleansing in Suffolk County. ...He is fanning the flames of hatred."

Typical Newsday/Bart Jones column.
From Long Island, NY.
Ya want a guaranteed place to sleep?
GO HOME!
My guess is that the local INS could find them a place to stay..
"The American Nightmare"? I don't think so. I think it might be a problem for illegal immigrants who don't respect America or our customs and way of life.
Immigrants who don't assimilate or respect our way of life should take a hike. A long one.
We don't owe them anything.
The need to go home and fix their own damn country.
It is about time that some of our elected officials starter worrying about the opinions of the voters and evict some illegals.
I love that "supposed to". I guess that's according to the same international human rights law book that says enemy terrorists are supposed to get jury trials and review by the Ninth Circuit.
You're right. Instead of running away from their problems, they need to fix them.
"ethnic cleansing"? Must they all, Durbin-like, cheapen real atrocities like this? These are presumably illegal immigrants, living in illegal, unsafe, overcrowded housing. They were correctly evicted. How is that "ethnic cleansing"?
The article doesn't mention whether the immigrants were legal or illegal. Under the 14th Amendment it wouldn't make any difference anyway.
If the police can raid one man's home at midnight and throw everyone out, they can raid any man's home. Almost all older homes have some code variance.
There is no indication of any hearing, warrant, court order or other form of due process.
There is nothing conservative or American about a police state. Papers please?
Did it ever cross his mind that the American Dream is FOR AMERICANS?
"Suffolk County is becoming a war zone on immigrants,"
and just pushing thier problem on other communities, why not sen them home - postage due
I love that "supposed to". I guess that's according to the same international human rights law book that says enemy terrorists are supposed to get jury trials and review by the Ninth Circuit.
I guess we should just go ahead and add it to the Bill of Rights. The U.S. is now required to "fuel the dreams" of illegal immigrants.
