Sorry, he broke the stay put rule. When you are lost, stumbling around in a panic only makes it worse.
That being said, I sure am pleased he is OK.

How did he get lost? I remember the last one that was never found was simply walking a short distance and got turned around. I am elated over this one.

I am pleased he is OK too. However, the stay put rule doesn't apply when a person is in need of water or shelter. I've always trained Scouts to be sure to observe the direction and landmarks they travel in and around and most importantly, when in thick vegetation or featureless terrain where prominent landmarks aren't present (semiarid deserts), MARK YOUR TRAIL, IF YOU WANT TO SURVIVE AND FIND YOUR WAY BACK!
