PHILADELPHIA -- Violence between biotech protesters and police in Center City Philadelphia has turned tragic. A Philadelphia police officer has died after a scuffle in Center City on Tuesday.
The officer, Paris Williams, 52, may have died from a heart attack but homicide is also investigating the case. He is a 19-year veteran.
Williams collapsed near the end of a brawl between protesters and police that lasted for several minutes near 12th and Arch Streets. Some protesters were seen being taken away in handcuffs by police after the incident. The fallen officer was taken away in an ambulance.
Police department spokesman Jim Pauley said Williams was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital shortly after 1 p.m.
I wonder what these protesters think of human cloning/genetic engineering on human DNA.
My God! I'm right near this and was watching the protestors walk up Market Street toward City Hall around lunch time. It was a rag tag group and not all that large, maybe 100 tops. They had signs and a bullhorn but it was mostly a freak show definitely nothing violent. There were tons of police in the area, three helicopters in the sky. If anything it looked like the police had it covered way more than needed. This incident obviously has changed the whole tenor of the situation. I'll go down and look around. I hope the protestors disbanded out of respect for this tragedy.
Looks like the "peace, love and understanding" crowd are at it again.

excellent point Pyro! While I've been fortunate enough to have never personally met a hard-core anti-biotech person, I do know many liberals who are strongly opposed to biotechnology, genetically modified crops, that sort of thing. They only eat organic foods and are so paranoid about "chemicals" in their foods that it is quite humorous (especially because they chain smoke and use various illegal drugs). Anyhow, none of these liberals have the least problem with genetically engineering humans, cloning, stem-cell research, etc. In fact they are very much in favor of it and hate Bush for his stand against it.
What about biotech were they protesting?
What ticks me off about these people is that they pretend to care so much about peace and what's best for the world, but they're the ones that are violent. How often do you see conservative protesters attacking police officers?
The point here is the officer was lawfully performing his duty; the terrorist sympathizers had no right to assault ("scuffle with" in PC language) him. There's a doctrine called misdemeanor manslaughter. The whole idea is that she who assaults another takes her victim as he is and is criminally liable for what happens. Thus, in this case, if the assault on the officer caused his death due to a heart attack, those who assaulted him could be prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter. They certainly ought to be.
Prayers for Officer Williams Family.
Probably that we're playing God, and we really don't know the end results of the changes we are making to these organisms. We get burnned constantly because of our short sightedness and failure to forsee the changes we are inducing and then introducing into nature.
I used to do genetic engineering research on corn (Z. Mays), and it is astonishing how little thought is given to the negative effects introduced. Betweeen that and the corporate greed it was enough to make me leave the field completely.
Ping.
(they do not allow me to cuss out loud here)
What do you mean by this - can you give us some examples?
Those Tomatoes with the fish genes in them, yuk!
Prayers for officer Williams.
"How bout some nice, tasty tomaccoes."
Why is this any different?
All I can say is that I had an Eric Cartman moment:
"DAMN HIPPIES!!"
