Hmmm... I'm really happy for the kid and his family. They had thousands of searchers on Father's Day! The news media thinks that that's a phenomenon, but it's the nature of Mormons -not just Utah- to value unity and life to an enormous extent. Now a few things on how he could have gotten by just fine (I'm a Boy Scout):

1) You can survive for weeks without food. Sure, you'll be hungry, but you can get by on water and a good sleep shedule. I know a guy who fasted for 40 days, and all he would ingest was a very limited amount of water, and he's still around today, thriving and healthy.

2) Never underestimate a Boy Scout. They have an innate ability/perception that most people don't have.

When lost STOP find/build a shelter and wait for us to find you, as a "lost" Scout think big, make noise and a large marked trail....
