But, John Skerry, the DNC, and the MSM told me they were the same? Does that mean they were lying?

Interesting article and interesting perspective these guys have. Thanks for posting. I found it especially comforting to know that they think there is more support at home than during Vietnam ... that leads me to believe those of us who are vocal in our support of the troops are doing our jobs.

AFAIK, USA Today has no choice about excerpts due to the "fair use" rule. If they give general public access to their own articles, they can't deny "fair use" of excerpts.

3 points

1. Experienced veterans are reporting progress and positive reception from Iraqis.
2. Vietnam was a tougher fight as was the Viet Cong.
3. If these old vets are still fighting it says a lot about retention among the armed forces despite all of the negative MSM stories.

What I dont get is why USA Today would run a story like this vs. an "insider" story on an insurgent ambushing US troops? They need to get their priorities straight here.

USA Today is obviously part of the Republican Noise Machine. (Scream louder, Howard! North Dakota can't hear you!)

"But the danger in Iraq is higher for those who are shot down but survive. "There's no such thing as a POW," he says, referring to the terrorists' penchant for executing Westerners. "The enemy in Iraq has "absolutely no value" for life, Dargue says, who flew Huey helicopters in Vietnam from June 1968 to June 1969. Miles says the biggest difference he saw was that, over time, Iraqi civilians grew more positive toward U.S. forces."

I can't believe they actually printed this - that "the enemy in Iraq has 'absolutely no value' for life," AND that the Iraqi civilians are more positive towards US forces! They really will be accused of being a right-wing feel-good warmongering paper. And culturally insensitive, too.

They are National Guard. You can be in your sixties and still be in the Guard, there is no manadory retirement based on years of service as long as one is an active reservist/guardsman and effectively no "up or out", at least at the senior NCO, senior warrant, field grade officer levels.

Yes, North Vietnamese regulars as well as the Viet Cong were tough soldiers willing to fight toe to toe against GI's. Big difference from the terrorists coming in from Saudi Arabia and Syria. This is important to remember when we evaluate the performance of the volunteer force and the performance of females in "combat". It ain't the same kind of "combat".
