Eleanor Mondale Diagnosed With Cancer

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eleanor Mondale, the daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale, has been diagnosed with brain cancer, the Star Tribune reported Tuesday.

Mondale spoke to the newspaper just hours before she began her first session of radiation and chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Just a week ago, Mondale married local rock star Chan Poling.

"It's bad but not that bad," she said from her farmhouse in Prior Lake. "I've got a really good chance to beat it."

Mondale, 45, said her vision had bothered her in recent months but didn't believe there was anything seriously wrong until a camping trip May 16, when she suffered two seizures.

Doctors determined she had two tumors, both in her frontal lobe, and on May 31 they were found to be cancerous.

Mondale will undergo nearly seven weeks of oral chemotherapy and radiation, which could either zap the tumors completely or reduce them to a size that makes surgery safer.

Just a bit of info...the Bears are a football team, Keith Van-Horne is a basketball player. And I'm pretty certain his college ball was at Utah, not BYU.

It cracks me up as well that many people don't know that there is more than one person with that name and they were both professional athletes.

From an article about Chicago-area Dog Trainers:

"New Tricks" - Chicago Tribune October 1988

Mellin will also call owners who haven't been in for a while.

"He keeps me on it," says Eleanor Mondale, daughter of the 1984 Democratic nominee and wife of chicago Bear keith Van Horne. She first took her "rather independent" Rottweiller, Wilma, four months ago.

"She was getting to be a bit too much for me," Mondale said. "And I really liked the way he worked with her. he was very positive. He got what he wanted from her with a logical, sensible training method."

Thank you. We're in a club that no one ever wants to join but that can only be truly understood by those who survive and those who caregive to the end.

"Ok Ned, let's review. Steely Dan is not one person, James Dean was an actor, Jimmy Dean makes suasage, we don't don't get french benefits, and Ned, it's not the leaning tower of pizza."

That's a shame. Frontal lobe doesn't seem like too good a spot to go digging out a tumor. Scary.

I've said a prayer for her, and I hope Freepers will treat her with respect on this thread.

Keith Van Horne who played Tackle for the Chicago Bears (and who, incidentally, USED to be married to Eleanor Mondale) went to USC during his college years and was drafted from there by the Chicago Bears in 1981.

She should consider writing a book about her relationship with Bill Clinton for the historical record if she's up to it.

Mine passed at the age of 43 from breast cancer. She was gorgeous and gave me two handsome intelligent sons.

No experience could be worse than losing her in that way.

Yep. The Keyboard player, IIRC.

Best of luck to Mondale facing the big C.

I was amused (and impressed) by his reaction to Ronald Reagan's "youth and inexperience" line during the debate. Mondale himself laughed along with everyone else, probably because he couldn't help it. I know he was probably thinking to himself, "There goes the election," but still his laughing about it was classy.

Everytime I see that clip, I think the same thing. Besides Zell, Mondale was and still is one of the classiest dems left.

Thanks for the info.

Best wishes to Eleanor in licking this thing. I lost my 4 year old niece to brain cancer some years ago, and it wasn't pretty.

Mine was 48. Beautiful and wacky in a Lucy sort of way. You are so right about how terrible it is. To me the only thing that would have been worse would be to lose a child. It's been over two years and I still feel like I'm learning to walk with one leg.

I went to college with Ms. Mondale and remember her as a spirited, attractive and likable person who always had a lot of friends. Prayers to her and her family.
