President Bush faces a politically thorny situation _ and stark choices _ now that Senate Democrats twice have blocked John Bolton's confirmation as U.N. ambassador The president could withdraw the nomination, authorize further concessions to Democrats over access to information they seek or bypass lawmakers altogether by appointing the former State Department official to the job temporarily without the Senate's OK. But any of those options could leave the president appearing weak as he confronts sagging poll numbers and fights to stave off a lame-duck label just six months into his final term. "It's time for the Senate to give him an up-or-down vote. Now," the president said.

Fox news is reporting this also...
"It's time for the Senate to give him an up-or-down vote. Now," the president said"
This is the part that errks me the most. If you're so against this nominee then vote him down. But don't do this....
"Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, a leading Democrat in the battle against Bolton, suggested after the vote that any number of "good, strong, tough conservatives" could be confirmed more easily than Bolton.
"I would strongly encourage the administration tonight to move on, to give us another nominee, someone who the administration can support, that we can support here," Dodd said"
(sigh, scratches head) frustrating.......
Didn't the Bork thing bury Bolton already? Sigh, short memories... Why are they even giving this guy a second chance?
In addition, Bolton's long record of money laundering and shell company rip-offs should disqualify him from any office of trust. I believe the National Congressional Club is still trying to find out what happened to the $650k that Bolton siphoned off into his pet money tree Jefferson Marketing.
Bush should take Dodd's advice. Withdraw the Bolton nomination. Replace him with a "good, strong, tough conservative" named Ann Coulter. Now all you liberal whiners, let's have a vote. Up or down. In fact, let's have some hearings. I'd like nothing better than to tune into C-SPAN to see Ms. Coulter chew up and spit out disgraces like Ted Kennedy, Chris Dodd, Hillary Rodham and Patty Murray.
Time to nuke 'em!
Past time.
I have not heard anything about this. Please provide a reference.
Would Keyes take the job again?
Personally, if I'm President Bush, I send a nicely written message on fine stationary to Dodd asking him to please 'go pound sand'. Then, I recess appoint Bolton and hit the road for the 4th.
I like your idea best... :o)
Source, please ?
Yep, that will resolve this mess cleanly, but not exactly victoriously.
The worst outcome would be that Bolton doesn't get the job. Maybe the Rats will be strutting their stuff, but our man is in there (recess), and I believe he's the kind of person who will make a definite impact within one year, to the point that he'll get confirmed at the end of his recess term.
I saw McLame on Brit Hume last night. He called on Durbin to apologize, and predicted that would occur by 6/19/05. (The interview was taped a week earlier.) He was then asked about judicial appointments and his "Gang of 14", and he blithly said that his gang would control those appointments, the president would ask for their approval, etc. What a dick! (Couldn't help it folks.)
To say he and his gang have ruined everything for the Repubs is not much of an overstatement. The nuke option is gone because of him.
Frist futilely called for the second Bolton vote, and got hammered. Do you guys remember how happy and confident we were back in February that Frist had the votes, and the nuke, and would surely get nearly everybody confirmed, while the Dems just continued to eat it?
McLame and his gang killed that. What a dick! >8(
"The president will not suffer if he issues a recess appointment for Bolton."
I agree. The ninnies in the media will then provide President Bush ample opportunity to make the point that "the UN needs reform and Bolton is a reformer".
I watched Independence Day last night and I believe the proper term is "Nuke the bastards!"
I think that, President Bush, just to make a point, should recess appoint Bolton and about 25 judges who have been waiting to run the senate gauntlet.
When you make such an accusation you should provide a link and a credible source.
I agree with you, Bolton should be appointed US Ambassador to the UN during recess. Having said that, I can't wait to see future Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings with Ambassador Bolton being questioned by those dirtballs Dodd, Voinovich, and Biden. Wouldn't miss it for the world.
"Bush should take Dodd's advice. Withdraw the Bolton nomination. Replace him with a "good, strong, tough conservative" named Ann Coulter."
You talk about a wet dream for me....Ann Coulter...hell I'd take her Michelle Malkin....Ann Richards....I could go on...lol...even Hillary....J/k...just had to see if you guys were still paying attention out there!
