Frist tells Durbin to apologize on Senate floor

By James G. Lakelyand Stephen Dinan

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

June 21, 2005

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist yesterday demanded that Sen. Richard J. Durbin make a "formal apology" on the floor of the Senate for comparing U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay to Nazi and Soviet regimes and that he strike his remarks from the Congressional Record.

In a letter to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, Mr. Frist, Tennessee Republican, said previous bids by the Senate's No. 2 Democrat to clarify his remarks didn't go far enough.

"Subsequent statements by Senator Durbin indicate only that he was regretful if people misunderstood his remarks," Mr. Frist said. "We do not believe his remarks were misunderstood."

The letter is the latest in a wave of criticism against the Illinois Democrat, which yesterday was joined by the Anti-Defamation League and a White House spokesman and, over the weekend, by Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican and a prisoner of war in Vietnam who was tortured in captivity.

Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), said Mr. Durbin's apology "was not sufficient" and contrasted the Democrat's reaction to that of Sen. Rick Santorum, Pennsylvania Republican, who was criticized by the ADL for likening the use of the filibuster on judges to Nazi tactics. "Senator Santorum apologized," Mr. Foxman said. "Senator Durbin's explanation is not an apology, and I think an apology is in order."

I'll believe it when I see it. Just like there would be an up or down vote on Bolton this week. HA. The Republicans wimp out on every issue.

Frist, do yourself a favour, and contribute the little graphical drawing of yourself that should appear next to the definition of ''wussie'' in the next edition of whichever dictionary. Who knows, perhaps some homosexual lexicographer might decide that you're a nice boy.

Censure Durbin's ass, you ineffectual snivelling jerk! (Not clear enough? I can be a damned sight clearer, mate.)

So the Republicans don't have an agenda huh? Dingy Harry should know about a party that has NO agenda. On the other hand, the Republicans continue to take the "high road" in dealing with these traitorous thugs. It's time for some of them to grow some cajones and make a big deal out of this. How many soldiers have to die because this guy makes statements that feed our enemy's recruitment?
There is no other word to describe Durbin's statement other than "TRAITOROUS".

Since they won't hang him for treason, I don't want a non-apology apology, I want expulsion. He's HATES the American Military and America. He doesnt DESERVE to be a US Senator!

"Action is eloquence." Wm. Shakespeare

Forget anemic apologies. This calls for expulsion. If betraying his country in a time of war has no consequences, then why have laws? Durbin IS still a lawmaker.

Frist--drop by the Spaulding factory and get some balls!

Is there ANY Republican Senator who would make the kind of Leader I can approve of? Because Frist is WORTHLESS.

Why is he behaving as if he has to ask permission of the minority leader to do what has to be done? Censure his ass!

What does an apology accomplish when it isn't going to be sincere. He might say the appropriate words, but he won't mean it. Kick his ass out. Pardon my french.

"ABC CBS NBC CNN its all the SAME, Propaganda"

On the grapevine tonight, Brit says the NY Times didn't even cover this at all.

When the first insult to the US troops was delivered by Durbin, I think it was covered on page 10.

OK--I'll concur with that.
But, half a loaf is inadequate in this instance.

I respectfully suggest that Frist tender his resignation concurrently. Never in my 50 years of tracking American Politics have I seen a more ineffectual Majority Leader.

I do not question Dr. Frist's surgical capabilities. However, when neutering of the Democratic congressional opposition is the order of the day, I submit that the good doctor does not know what to even look for, much less grab!!

Frist has got to go -- but, even then, the damage to this four year term has been irrevocably done! A full election cycle down the tube -- but Bush has only himself -- and his timidity -- to blame!! His advise has been terrible -- and he has squandered his clout to a degree unimaginable six months ago!

It's not "Koo Koo Kachoo," it's actually "Goo Goo Kajoob." I know it doesn't sound like it the way John sings it, but when you read the lyrics on the sheet music for "Walrus," that's how it's spelled.
