It is astounding that a forty-year U.S. senator can admit that the most influential person in his life when he was young, was a Klan leader that told him he had leadership potential. Where is the MSM on that? Byrd is a strange bird.

The horses wouldn't let those idiots ride them unless they covered their faces too.

I love how AOL features this story with a photo of a distraut-looking Byrd, and the sub-headline "Rivals still use it against Byrd". Awwwww, poor grandpa!

Now can we hear once more from larry sabato and the other "experts" about how the keagle is unbeatable!
I predict that by giddy up time the old bas$%d will drop out so he can steal all the remaining campaign money he has. Don't forget the klansman has been around long enough to still have the right to take his campaign money and run, unlike modern pols.

From today's Wheeling newspaper:

Dem Chairman: Byrd Run Likely

By JOSELYN KING

U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., hasn't yet announced he is running for re-election, but he will be in Wheeling for a fund-raiser in his honor on Friday.

"I think it does mean he intends to run again," said Ohio County Democratic Party Chairman Shane Mallett.
"He hasn't announced yet, but I think this is a great sign that he intends to run."

Byrd on Friday will first attend the dedication of the new federal courthouse and the courthouse annex in downtown Wheeling. This is slated for 4 p.m.

The fund-raiser for Byrd is then set to begin at 7 p.m. in Wilson Lodge at Oglebay Park.

Mallett is certain that Byrd should seek re-election in 2006.

"There's no doubt he should run again," he said. "All of the great things he has done for state show he is capable of performing at that level.

"I look forward, and the showing will prove that he has the support" to win re-election.

Byrd, currently 87, would be 88 years old next year when the campaign begins. If re-elected, he would be 89 when he takes office, and 95 at the completion of his next six-year term.

The fact isn't lost on the GOP that Byrd - first elected to the Senate in 1958 - could be vulnerable in his long-held seat.

U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore-Capito, R-W.Va., has been touted as a potential challenger next year. If Capito does leave the House to run for the Senate seat, Mallett predicts it could be a very contentious election.

"We could see a campaign worse than the McGraw race" in 2004, Mallett said.

"But if Capito decides not to run, the senator won't have competition from anybody else.

"It will be interesting to see if she does run," he added.

"It is going to be close in the House for the Republicans to keep control. If (Capito) leaves the House, it will be real tight as to who would win the seat. The rumor is the Republicans don't want to risk that spot."
