Queen Elizabeth II cancels 3 engagements

LONDON (AP) - Queen Elizabeth II has canceled three engagements after catching a cold, Buckingham Palace announced Monday.

The engagements included a visit to the elite Sandhurst military academy near London, where the 79-year-old monarch's grandson Prince Harry is a cadet officer. The queen developed a sore throat over the weekend and has a "heavy" cold, a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said.

She withdrew from a reception late Monday to mark the centenary of the charity Friends of the Elderly at St. James' Palace in central London. She also canceled a Tuesday visit to Sandhurst to watch officer cadets on parade and an audience later that day with Singapore President S. R. Nathan at Buckingham Palace.

The queen is often described as robustly healthy. She travels around Britain and abroad frequently.

Her eldest son, Prince Charles, is heir to the throne, but the queen has said she would never step down.

Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh leave Buckingham Palace in London, June 11, 2005, for the official birthday of the queen. A bad cold has forced the Queen to cancel several engagements, including a visit to the military academy where her grandson Prince Harry is training, the royal household said.(AFP/File/John D. Maybe she doesn't want to be seen with her family.

The royal family should cancel all engagements permanently. Imagine hanging onto this charade for this long.

I love her hat. The queen always looks so elegant and distinguished these days.

I think she's beautiful, and a great role model as far as duty and dignity go.

From the parade of weirdos at the big wedding (of Charles and Camilla) I think the Queen is the best looking, most dignified one in the bunch.

Definitely. She reminds me of the line from "The Princess Diaries": "Grandma, you are the queenest Queen ever!"

I'm not all that crazy about her hats, but at least she isn't wearing a babushka as she has in some photos. Looks so dowdy in those pics.

She does look great. She was very pretty as a new queen, I think.

I like the monarchy of Britain. It gives stability to the country, our strongest ally.

Few people realize how powerful the Queen is. She began her role with Winston Churchill, who participated in the last cavalry charge (in Britain's history) at Omdurman. I don't think Tony Blair was born when she began her reign, so her wisdom from many generations is good for the country, good for the Free World.

wePod approve.

I guess this means that nothing she listens to is royalty-free.

Yes, I agree. Queen Elizabeth was a pretty young woman, and she's an attractive old woman. Dignity and self-control are appealing at any age.
