Marines claim insurgents are on the run

United States and Iraqi troops, backed by US and British aircraft, have hunted and killed foreign fighters in the town of Karabila near the Syrian border.

They prowled house to house yesterday in search of guerrilla bases.

In Baghdad, a suicide bombing claimed by Jordanian al- Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's group killed at least 23 people, many of them police and security guards eating lunch at a restaurant outside the Green Zone government compound. It was the bloodiest attack in the capital since a major crackdown on insurgent activity began in Baghdad a month ago.

Zarqawi and Sunni Arab allies in Iraq have declared war on the new Shi'ite-led administration, whose elected parliament was meeting just a few hundred metres from the blast.

A leading organisation for Iraq's Sunni Arabs - the minority once dominant under Saddam Hussein - accused US forces of killing women and children and destroying homes, schools and other civilian buildings around Karabila and Qaim."

Operation Spear... will break on the rock of Iraqi solidarity," the Muslim Clerics' Association said in a statement, reflecting anger at US military tactics.

They gave us great music, the sexual revolution, some of the best movies I've ever seen, and the civil rights movement--all great accomplishments.

I wouldn't call the 44 million babies legally torn apart in their mothers' wombs since 1973 a "great accomplishment."

The Iraqi police need to f***ing learn how to prevent such attacks and not to make themselves so vulnerable to it.

Oh, good grief. Come up with a darned solution if it's so simple for you. It is easy to slaughter innocent people in an open society.

Why don't you focus your rage on the evil terrorists, where it belongs? If everyone did that, Al Qaeda would have ceased to exist long ago.

The most frustrating part of this war is the Fifth column that is the MSM and the Libs we are fighting at home here. It is just unreal.

Their utter hate to President Bush has blinded their hearts and their minds from speaking the truth and writing the truth. But the truth will always come out and nobody can destroy it. The tragic part of all this that liberals and their media whores hate President Bush so much that they are intentionally or unintentionally siding with the terrorists against our military, as in the war in Iraq, Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, etc.... However the majority of American will always see the truth no matter how the liberals try to hide it or distort it. The liberals and their media tried all these despicable tactics so cruelly, so brutally, and for so many times in 2004 but the majority of voters said we do not believe you, and President Bush was elected with largest number of votes ever cast for a President.

Coop you vastly misunderstood what I wrote my fellow freeper. Of course I am so angry at the terrorists who are killing people left and right. As I wrote in another posts on this thread I am very optimistic that the terrorist insurgency will be almost dead if not dead by the end of this year due to the great and heroic efforts of our military aided by the brave Iraqi army and police. All what I would like to see is that the Iraqi security forces to take more protective measures against terrorists attacks, and I am sure that they will eventually learn how to overcome this problem and beat these evil terrorists.

They are justifiably proud of the art and culture they created in the sixties

I'm boomer, graduated from high school in '68. I don't think the stuff from "the sixties" is really what you might think. Most of the socially conscious, PC, anti-war stuff came right at the very end of the decade, while all the good music came earlier, from the 50s to the mid to late 60s. Other than the music, what great art and culture came out of the boomer generation?

Some really sexy technology dates from then, mostly as spin offs from military research, although the foundations where developed somewhat earlier, again with a fair amount of military research funding involved.
