Marines claim insurgents are on the run

United States and Iraqi troops, backed by US and British aircraft, have hunted and killed foreign fighters in the town of Karabila near the Syrian border.

They prowled house to house yesterday in search of guerrilla bases.

In Baghdad, a suicide bombing claimed by Jordanian al- Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's group killed at least 23 people, many of them police and security guards eating lunch at a restaurant outside the Green Zone government compound. It was the bloodiest attack in the capital since a major crackdown on insurgent activity began in Baghdad a month ago.

Zarqawi and Sunni Arab allies in Iraq have declared war on the new Shi'ite-led administration, whose elected parliament was meeting just a few hundred metres from the blast.

A leading organisation for Iraq's Sunni Arabs - the minority once dominant under Saddam Hussein - accused US forces of killing women and children and destroying homes, schools and other civilian buildings around Karabila and Qaim."

Operation Spear... will break on the rock of Iraqi solidarity," the Muslim Clerics' Association said in a statement, reflecting anger at US military tactics.

Thanks for post.
"A hundred or so people waving white flags walked out from northern areas of Karabila at dawn yesterday after loudspeaker warnings that marines were about to seize the district."

What the hell do we read in the title: "Claim insurgents are on the run".
Well what else are they doing as we mop em up? Morons don't even understand how to word things to represent the realities of what they report. There so deeply trained to slant. Any ways seems like most of the report is about right.
I hate to think what Marine was KIAed. I may be reading about him and having to send yet another letter of condulance to some dear family at a web site I frequent for Marine families and friends.

May the good Lord provide the required mercy for this Marines loved ones to bear up to their current grieve and loss.
I will say this much. I it is not reneging on how I have voiced my general opinion on how things go in the Iraqi area of combat. It would be nice to hear that we sent another infantry battalion of Marines into this area to beef up the current four. It could make a lot of difference. If anything, relieve some of them from their often 16 hour days. These guys got it tought up in the north and west. No nice full service FOBs to lay around at in this area if you know what I mean. Strictly spartan to say the best.

The Iraqi police need to f***ing learn how to prevent such attacks and not to make themselves so vulnerable to it. Why they were eating in an open public place like this when they should know by now that some terrorist may come and blow himself up? It is the Macho Arab mentality that make them so nochalent in taking measures to protect themselves.

Great news. Before the end of the year the terrorist insurgency will be very weak if not practically dead.

My first thought is that they are obviously not taking hints from the Jews in Israel...

They prowled house to house

He just couldn't resist a slur term to describe their actions. Pathetic. but, I'm sure he has hope that his discription of the soldiers detonating grenades attached to a body will get a FULL investigation by Turben et al, for cruel and inhumane treatment of a dead terrorist.

The boomer generation is just hard to figure. They are justifiably proud of the art and culture they created in the sixties; however, they mostly want to forget how that art (and political seech) was mostly responsible for creating the political movement that left millions of Vietnamese to die in Pol Pots killing fields.

Now, as the elders of our country, they act as if they want the same faite for the Iraqi's. It's a hard act for them. Even a liberal can see that the people of the Middle East deserve freedom. The truth is, they are really in an intellectual quandry. Helping the Iraqi's build a free society is basically admitting they were wrong in the sixties about Vietnam.

The should really be more mature about it, in my opinion. They gave us great music, the sexual revolution, some of the best movies I've ever seen, and the civil rights movement--all great accomplishments. They just happened to sell out freedom along the way. Hey. We all have regrets. Until they admit they screwed up (or until they die off), we'll always have trouble supporting freedom abroad.

I don't think its the macho deal. We and the Iraqis are doing very, very well considering where this all began not so very long ago. I get upset too, but they are all doing really well. This in a country that was for years a dictatorship run by thugs. I admire the Iraqis for even becomming military or police. And our military is to be congratulated for working with them to get them up and going and keep them going.

Well, we all know our Marines cannot be trusted to tell the truth. Clearly their word isn't good enough for McMaverick and McHagel and certainly their actions would be condemned as a crime against humanity by Durby.

I completely agree with that our military in Iraq is doing beyond great and the Iraqis security forces and police have enhanced a lot and are taking now much more responsibilities in securing the country and fighting terrorists. However it still upset me that they can fall in trap for some of these suicide bombers like in police stations, recruiting centers, restaurants, buses, etc… Trust me I know this part of the world very well and I understand the mentality of the Arab men. Taking a lot of protective action is considered for many as “not manly”. Overall I am very optimistic about the future of Iraq and I think that the terrorist insurgency will be almost dead if not completely dead by the end of this year.

Thanks for your reply. Upon reflection, you have a point there. I too, have wondered why they have been easy targets. I am sure that is part of the equation. It is refreshing to hear your optimism. The most frustrating part of this war is the Fifth column that is the MSM and the Libs we are fighting at home here. It is just unreal.
