Sorry -halfway through when I found it, but awesome description of Washington's journey in the struggle for America's freedom, and just how close we came to being British subjects, and the role Providence played. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Is that a good book? I've thought of buying it, but I am wary of any PC drivel.

I've seen him describe the book and the nearly insurmountable obstacles Washington and his troops faced, and it is inspiring and riveting. He says, "if there is a lucky star shining over America, one of those lucky occasions has to be that the Senate chose Washington to be the General of this army, and that he never never never gave up."

Haven't read it yet, but McCullough's biography of John Adams was outstanding...the opposite of PC since in it he lionized a founding father that the left hates.

Haven't read "1776" yet, but we bought it. I liked David McCullough's books on Harry Truman and John Adams.
We also bought the audio book to listen to for when we go on a long trip. I like to listen to McCullough's voice. He was the narrator on the "Civil War" series and the host of the "American Experience" series.
I've heard David McCullough speak in person here in St. Louis twice for the Missouri Historical Society, and he is an excellent, thoughtful, and inspiring speaker.

I heard part of a Tim Russert interview of him the other day, and then I heard part of the C-Span talk today, got to have the book!

I knew it would be great .. thanks! He speaks with almost reverent emotion about the nobility and steadfastness of Washington and the miracles that happened, beyond logical understanding.

Washington held firm, even when others were doubting his ability to lead. The only time Washington lost his comportment was at Kip's Bay when he rode among his retreating troops and began beating some of them with his riding crop.
Some, like Nathaniel Greene and Henry Knox, never lost their confidence in him even though Washington at times, after the disaster at Brooklyn, doubted his ability to lead.
