Spanish protest gay marriage

Saturday, June 18, 2005 Posted: 2001 GMT (0401 HKT)

Protesters opposing a bill to legalize same sex marriage march Saturday through the Plaza del Sol in Madrid.

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Hundreds of thousands of people led by 20 Roman Catholic bishops and conservative opposition leaders clogged downtown Madrid on Saturday in a demonstration against the Socialist government's bill to legalize gay marriage and permit gay couples to adopt children.

Chanting in favor of the family and children's rights, the demonstration, called by a lay Catholic group, the Spanish Forum for the Family, was held in a festive atmosphere with participants waving colorful balloons and Spanish and regional flags.

A half hour into the demonstration, organizers were claiming 1.5 million people had attended. But media eyewitnesses found the estimate difficult to believe, with most putting the crowd size at some 500,000. No police figure was immediately available.

It's a case of too little, too late for Spain, I fear. But it's good to know that the home of my ancestors is not totally without hope.

What do Spain and Poland have in common? They are both ruled by Leftist parties.

(It is not accurate to say Socialist parties because many Christians in Europe belong to Christian Socialist parties)

Too late, the Spaniards have simply not learned the difference between "citizens" and "subjects". The Socialist regime will impress their will upon the masses regardless of what they want. They've got the government they deserve.</P>

Anytime someone comes down on the right side of an issue they deserve a pat on the back.

It takes a lot of little victories to win a war.

Socialist is an economic system - plenty of Christian Socialist parties in Europe. The party in power in Spain is a Secular Socialist party.

It´s because the Socialists and the gays asked the Attorney General (Conde Pumpido) to arrest anyone who had a sign that the gays considered ¨insulting.¨ It says, can I make a gesture?

Madrid's Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela (C) marches alongside people holding anti-gay marriage banners that read 'Family= Man and Woman' as they walk through central Madrid June 18, 2005. The march in Madrid by the 'Forum of the Family' against the Socialist government's plans to grant gay unions the same status as heterosexual marriage will be the first time Spanish bishops have protested a specific piece of legislation. Homosexual "Marriage"

True marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Legal recognition of any other union as "marriage" undermines true marriage, and legal recognition of homosexual unions actually does homosexual persons a disfavor by encouraging them to persist in what is an objectively immoral arrangement.

"When legislation in favor of the recognition of homosexual unions is proposed for the first time in a legislative assembly, the Catholic lawmaker has a moral duty to express his opposition clearly and publicly and to vote against it. To vote in favor of a law so harmful to the common good is gravely immoral" (UHP 10).

I´m in Spain right now. I´m in Barcelona for business and wasn´t able to attend the march in Madrid, unfortunately. But it´s been a big, big thing here. The press coverage has been foaming with hatred against the bishops and the Church, and the left did its level best to provoke some kind of incident. Most of the press (except for ABC and La Razón) has headlines about the ¨obispos y la derecha,¨ that is, the bishops and the right-wingers.

When the left turns up in the calle, it´s something to be honored and respected. When conservatives turn out, it´s an attempt at a coup and something to be ridiculed and, if possible, repressed.

I really hope the Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid gets some special recognition from the Vatican in some way. I don´t want him to leave Madrid, though. He´s been great - he has rejuvenated the Church there and is a true leader.

Nothing's ever too little or too late. It's just that the vast majority of people will put up with an awful lot before mobilizing. That's why you have to stick to your principles. Because if you have truth on your side, sooner or later, people will come to recognize it and agree with you. For any issue, it is unknown in advance when the tipping point of public opinion will come.

You can always tell whether or not a public demonstration is legitimate by whether or not there are panoramic photos of people stretching out into the distance (as opposed to close ups). This is a legitimate demonstration. Good news.

May St. Catherine of Siena intercede on their behalf!

"To know and to understand the saints of the Church is to know and to understand the Savior better. Who among us does not feel the presence of the Messiah through the reading of Saints Peter and Paul, his greatest Apostles? It is regrettable that the average Christian can often call out the names of the lineup of his favorite baseball team, but cannot call to mind the twelve who were on the Savior’s varsity" Fr. George Poulos
