Durbin rebuked on floor of Senate
Washington Times ^ | 6/17/05 | Rowan Scarborough and James G. Lakely

Posted on 06/17/2005 2:44:38 AM PDT by advance_copy

The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman yesterday accused Sen. Richard J. Durbin of insulting American soldiers with a "grievous error in judgment" by comparing U.S. treatment of al Qaeda suspects to the crimes of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Pol Pot, and demanded that the Senate's No. 2 Democrat apologize.

The rebuke followed a similar rebuke by the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who called Mr. Durbin "totally out of line."

Republican lawmakers lined up to condemn the remarks as making the war on terror more dangerous for American troops.

Some were particularly angry about the Al Jazeera Arab-language news station, which had posted Mr. Durbin's Nazi comparison made in a Tuesday night floor speech.

"That's horrible. That's our worst nightmare," said Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, about the posting by the network, which the administration accuses of stirring up anti-Americanism.

In a Tuesday night speech to the Senate, after reading an e-mail from a FBI agent, Mr. Durbin said: "If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This as the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."

If Durbin was any kind of American, he'd be calling up Al Jazeera right now and demanding time to clarify or correct his remarks, and then he'd spend much of that time blasting the Arab world for sitting on its hands while Saddam invaded Kuwait and slaughtered his own people.

But Durbin isn't much of an American. Durbin isn't much of a man. As one Californian might say, Durbin is a girly man. He'll vote for Hillary in '08. He'll bash our troops even as they're being killed overseas. And he sits silently by while Al Jazeera runs with his anti-American remarks from the Senate floor. Pathetic!

Right now, they should be calling for the resignation of that Dick Durbin.

You're right. Trent Lott took a demotion for wishing Strom a happy birthday. What Durbin said was a million times more damaging to America than anything Lott has ever even thought of saying.

WMAL radio's morning show (the Limbaugh/Hannity station in DC) is covering and appropriately condemning Durbin, and it is not a conservative show. Imus is all over it too. I'm starting to hope Durbin has self-inflicted the end of his political career, which is the only just end to this.

They should interrogate the Gitmo prisoners with love, caring, and compassion. It says so right there in the Geneva conventions, which Dick Durbin is too stupid to know don't apply to terrorists.

Thanks for taking the attention away from Wheezy Conyers's ridiculous salivating over the Downing St. memo--aka the Downing Street Op-Ed--which proves absolutely nothing except someone had an opinion about US buildup to the war. (The big revelation seeming to be that George Bush planned to go to war before the first shots were actually fired--who knew?!)

Apologize, Dick. Or I will urinate on a copy of the Downing St. Memo down the toilet and get you Democrats REALLY mad.

Also, think back to all of the hoopla surrounding Trent Lott when he made those comments at Strom Thurmonds Memorial service. We went for weeks hearing from the mainstream communist propaganda networks calling for the hanging of Lott and for what? Making some "Old Southern" comments. That was it.

Now move forward. Dick Durbin stated, flat out, that a FBI agent told him how horrible Gitmo was and he compared our troops to Hitler, Stalin and Pot.

First off, Dicky boy, reveal the FBI agents identity. And then after that hand in your resignation.

Did Dick Durbin ever criticize Bill Clinton for raping Juanita Broaddrick, groping Kathleen Willey or attacking all the other Jane Does? I don't think he ever did. Not that I can remember. So why the hell does Durbin attack our troops now?

If Durbin can tolerate animalistic acts against innocent women by a draft-dodger like Clinton, why can't he tolerate hardball interrogation techniques being used on terrorists and enemies by our brave troops in an effort to gain intelligence to protect America?

I did not get to see all of the responses from Republicans. I did see part of Sen Kyl's response, and Sen Jeff Session's response.

Several real-life examples were given about what our sodiers are doing to get info to SAVE American lives, including mentioning the Army officer who had to retire for firing a gun too close to the ear of a terrorist in order to get info TO SAVE THE LIVES OF HIS MEN, GOING OUT TO BATTLE the terrorists.

Once you get past being outraged at Durbin's cruel rhetoric, you must get very worried that he thought it in his interest to use it (and he was probably right).

The terrible acts of the Democratic minority are being carried out to curry favor with their voters. The cultivation of a sensibility that makes US Marines = Pol Pot is putting the nation on the path to war at home, for mere political advantage.

It's disgraceful, and dangerous.

HRC/Durbin 2008!

Seriously, someone should ask the most corrupt First Lady in our nation's history if Durbin is on her short list for veep. It'd be fun to see her face as she responds.

I watched it all yesterday. Not one Democrat condemned Durbin's remarks. In fact only 2 dems spoke, Reid went on to blame Bush for Durbin's remarks and Byrd rambled incoherently about his father giving him crayons.

Have you ppl not learned that whatever a dem says these days is totally irrelevant and just designed to reflect their DO-NOTHING agenda? It's comments like what Durbin makes that controls the direction of issues because he's trying to elicit responses to something HE even knows is B.S. What are we talking about?????? It's surely not the accomplishments of the US military in Iraq!! Remember, this is ALL the dems and the MSM got, nothing else, and as usual it's total B.S.!

Take a lesson from Bush, basically ignor it, and let the dumbasses destroy their party!

Just basically ignor the friggin idiot, the same as you would some schmuck off the street whose pissin' themselves!
