Weather Factoid for the Day
Weather Guide Calendar

Posted on 06/16/2005 9:06:09 PM PDT by raygun

On this day in:

TOPICS: Miscellaneous; Philosophy; Unclassified; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: weather; wx1940; wx1983; wx1992; wx1998; wxevents; wxhistory; wxman; wxphenomenon; wxworld
1940: over 1000 16th century silver coins and the coins dropped out of a thunderstorm on the village of Merchery in the Gorki region of the Soviet Union. That sure beats raining cats and dogs (or even frogs as the case may be).

1983: Thunderstorm winds picked up a bolt from a nearby railroad track and blew it through a house in Lyndonville, VT. The bolt came to rest in a cement wall on the other side of the house.

1992: Severe thunderstorm winds caused much damage in IL's Grundy Country near Gebbard Woods State Park, IL's largest tree (and the largest cottonwood in the U.S.) was blown down. The tree was 138' tall. No mention on what the tree's name was.

1998: Thank God for global warming, or icicles literally would be coming out of our armpits. Since the day before, cold weather brought snow levels down to as low as 5800' in UT. Alta reported 22" (20" falling late this afternoon). Today's high of 33 Deg. F. beat the record lowest high by 19 Deg. F. Bryce Canyon NP reported 2.5" snow today.

Oh, man, did you have to tell us about the U.S.'s largest cottenwood tree being blown down in 1992? I wish I'd been there afterward to celebrate because I hate cottenwood trees.

Do you know what kind of a mess they are with their allergy-inflaming seed droppings, not to mention that they're also water-seeking plumbing killers? Every gardening book will tell you NOT to plant cottenwood trees near your house because their roots will go after your underground water pipes.

I just thought you'd want to know, thank you and have a blessed night.:)

Rain stopped at 0945 today. Scattered sprinkles still. I'm begining to notice the various fragrances that mold/mildew can have on different items.
Oh...whats this? I hear the bird-droppings like sound of rain on my patio awning. Once more it starts.

Well, at least you have that THI 83 going for you. If bird droppings fall like rain over there, that'd be a deal breaker for me for sure, but that's just me.

Oh, my bad, the rain sounds like bird-droppings. I don't know, I'm thinkin' that could be a deal breaker too. My source says that its misting right now. That must be some heavy mist. And anytime you can hear the humididty on your awning, that's some heavy humidity.

I lived within an hour of Grundy county that year. Don't know how I missed that one.

Today a freak afternoon lightning storm knocked out the radio station. This is the fourth day in a row the radio station has been zapped by lighning, but it usually occurs later in the day. This is early and it got Dr Laura, which is coming to be the best show on radio.

The lightning storm continues, now with hail. I went out to check for silver coins and to close the windows to the limo. No silver coins this time.
