John Glenn to Howie Metzenbaum, "I HAVE held a job, Howard!!" (classic retort to a louse)

Candidate John Glenn rebuked Howard Metzenbaum in 1974 primary. Metz. said Glenn "never met a payroll."

Glenn: "I served 23 years in the Marine Corps. I was through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions.

"I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, it was my life that was on the line.

"I ask you to go with me, and look those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn't hold a job.

"You go with me to any Gold Star mother, and you look her in the eye and tell her that her son did not hold a job.

"You go with me to the space program, and you go as I have gone to the widows and the orphans of Ed White and Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their dad didn't hold a job.

"You go with me on Memorial Day coming up, and you stand on Arlington National Cemetery — where I have more friends than I like to remember — and you watch those waving flags, and you stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn't have a job.

"I tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men — SOME MEN — who held a job. And they required a dedication to purpose and a love of country and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself.

"And their self-sacrifice is what has made this country possible.

"I HAVE HELD A JOB, HOWARD!"

Excellent retort put the near Socialist Metzenbaum firmly in his place and showed his true colors. It was John Glenn's finest moment in politics.
It's too bad Glenn became self-richeous later in his life.

John Glenn was a brave and courageous man, with many admirable qualities.

However, after watching him run interference for Bill Clinton, I have come to see that his courage was more about self aggrandizement and hot dogging than patriotism.

Glenn sold out America by doing everything possible to sandbag the Cox Commission's investigation of Clinton's self-serving and treasonous transfer of arms sale to China.

The quid pro quo to Glenn was a ride in the space shuttle.

When it comes to treasonous behavior, John Glenn is right up there with Jane Fonda, in my estimation.

Amen. And, while John Glenn undoubtedly has held a job, John Glenn has never has met a payroll.

Please! You may not like him, Lord knows, I don't but there are very few Americans (Thank G-d) comparable with Jane Fonda. John Glenn, for all of his faults, is not one of them.

I am too often intemperate myself, perhaps this was such a moment for you as well.

What do you mean by near?

I believe he was president of Royal Crown Cola after his military service and before his political career.

As great as John Glenn was, and he was very great indeed, he soiled himself by hanging with the Dems so long. I too lost a lot of respect for him during the Clinton years.

I am sorry, but I was totally appalled and outraged at watching Glenn's self serving and partisan obstruction of the Cox commission.

The transfer or Loral's missile technology gave China the capability to hit the US with nuclear weapons, something they never were able to do before.

Clinton should have been impeached for that. He allowed the transfer to go through purely in exchange for campaign contributions by Loral and by the Chinese.

Glenn's obstruction to present that story from coming to light was beyond disgusting, and showed complete disregard for the sacurity of our nation.

I don't think my outraged is overstated nor misplaced.

Things that make you think a little........

There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq during January....

In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January.

That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war torn country of Iraq.

When some claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following...

FDR...led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman...finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,334 per year.

John F. Kennedy...started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us. Johnson...turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton...went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

In the years since terrorists attacked us President Bush has ....liberated two countries; crushed the Taliban; crippled al-Qaida; put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and North Korea without firing a shot; and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but...It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound- That was a 51-day operation.

We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chapaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB! The Military morale is high!

The biased media hopes we are too ignorant to realize the facts.

I'm with you Maceman. I'll never forget how John Glenn killed the Chinagate Senate Hearings. (I also lost a lot of respect for Senator-Law-and-Order-Thompson for mismanaging the probe and hearings by letting Glenn and others sabotage it.

While Glenn was protecting the Clinton-China Commie Cash, his counterpart in the House--WAXMAN--was instructing the Chinese, make that Chinese------Americans, agents like Johnny Chung, John Huang, Charlie Trie, etc etc etc on how to take the 5th or otherwise stonewall.

I guess John Glenn never heard of Gold Star Families for Peace and Carol Sheehan. Mothers who sold out their kids heritage.

Don't forget, Detroit has a lower population than Iraq, so the percentage would actually be much higher.

John Glenn. My used to be Hero.

Too bad he didn't stay this way. I might still admire him in spite of his politics if he had.

Ditto. He disgraced himself by protecting bubba, and violated his oath.
