What's rattling Virginia? Fault lines in the GOP

OAK HILL, Va. — In this month's Virginia Republican primaries, the issue is taxes. And the vote could be a preview of coming attractions in the national GOP.

So while youthful legislative hopeful Chris Craddock stressed his conservative credentials on issues like abortion and gay marriage at a recent fund-raiser in this northern Virginia suburb, he made clear that taxes is "the main issue that got us into the race."

Why bother to vote Republican anymore? At a national level they outspend Democrats. At least we know what we'll get from Democrats. With Republicans, they promise one thing and then fail to deliver.

"Virginia is going to be a testing ground," said Michael Farris, a champion of conservative causes in Virginia who spoke at the Craddock fund-raiser. "If one or more of these incumbents fall, it will be a signal that the grass roots of the Republican Party still want people who stick to their principles."

Nothing like stating the obvious Mike. Sheesh. Of course, we want people who stick to their principles.

Reese agreed. "If a number of us lose, that message will be written and might well have some detrimental effects nationally," he said. But he said he had no regrets. "If that vote had gone the other way, the government would have been closed down and Virginia would have lost its Triple-A bond rating," he said, adding quickly that he also voted against a larger tax package.

Oh for crying out loud, you lying SOS! WE WOULD NOT HAVE LOST THE FREAKIN' BOND RATING!!!!! AAaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh! This statement is patently false.

The outcome could affect two Virginians seen as potential presidential candidates. Many Democrats see Warner, a moderate who opposes gun control, as the kind of presidential candidate who could appeal to the "red" states but believe he'd be damaged if Kaine lost.

For the ninety gazillionth time - MARK WARNER IS NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT A MODERATE. HE'S A FREAKIN' LIBERAL.

Oh man, my blood pressure just went up about 50 points.

I'll do my part to dump John Warner when the time comes.

Virginia's GOP has its share of tax and spend RINOs. They control in cooperation with minority Democrats, the Dominion State's Senate.

Cutting taxes is great, but what I really want to see is some cutting of spending. Does anyone have the guts to do it?

The primary is where you throw the RINOs out.

Thanks for the ping. I'm surprised only one RINO was picked off on Tuesday. I wonder if the other challengers were effective in explaining why they were running and their message was rejected, or were they weak in getting their message out.

Chris Craddock did have the added benefit of Michael Graham beating the drum on his talk radio show. I'm sure that helped lots.

On to victory in November!

Obviously, fiscal conservatism trumps social issues. You can simply not look at porn or not listen to crude lyrics -- no politicians' help required. However, you can't simply not pay your taxes if they get too high.

I'm surprised only one RINO was picked off on Tuesday.

You're forgetting about House District 41, where the RINO Dillard decided not to run again, thus leaving the seat open. Golden won that seat, over the establishment-backed RINO Finerfrock. So, that seat was also a pick-up for conservatives.

I didn't know about that one! Does Golden have a chance of winning in November? Is anything known about the Dem? Golden spoke one night at the County meeting when all the northern Virginia candidates spoke. I remember a good first impression.
