Sen. Durbin stands by Guantanamo remarks

CHICAGO - Sen. Dick Durbin refused to apologize Wednesday for comments he made on the Senate floor comparing the actions of American soldiers at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis, Soviet gulags and a "mad regime" like Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot's in Cambodia.

Durbin's comments created a buzz on the Internet Wednesday, fueled by sound bites of his speech on radio talk shows. By Wednesday afternoon, Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna asked Durbin to apologize.

"Senator Durbin's comments come as a great disservice to our military personnel in Guantanamo," McKenna said in a statement. "They are also a great disservice to all U.S. soldiers and veterans who have fought, and continue to fight, to overcome evil regimes and spread democracy around the world."

Durbin did not plan to apologize for the comments, spokesman Joe Shoemaker said.

"This administration should apologize to the American people for abandoning the Geneva Conventions and authorizing torture techniques that put our troops at risk and make Americans less secure," Durbin said in a statement Wednesday evening.

During a speech Tuesday, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat quoted from an FBI agent's report describing detainees at the Naval base in Guantanamo Bay as being chained to the floor without food or water in extreme temperatures.

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others - that had no concern for human beings," Durbin said.

Critics - mostly human-rights groups and Democrats - have long accused the administration of unjustly detaining suspects at the prison camp in Guantanamo.

The Bush administration calls the Guantanamo prisoners "enemy combatants" who are entitled to fewer legal protections than those afforded to prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions.

As Rush said, idiots in Illinois elected this doofus and his colleague in spirit Obama to the U.S Senate. This is as low as it gets from a U.S Senator - insulting our military. He doesn't have to apologize for Birdbrain Durbin just told the country his party's opinion of our national security.

I can just imagine what the reaction would have been during World War II if a senator had condemned FDR for having the Nazi saboteurs executed.

This can't last forever. There needs to come a day when we won't put up with this anymore.

Looks like the MSM is picking up the story.

Should be fun to watch another shrieking liberal get his comeuppance.

I ask these questions again.

Sen. Durbin:

How hot was it inside those train cars the victims of the Holocaust were put in?

How hot was it inside those ovens the victims of the Holocaust were put in?

How hot was it inside the burning World Trade Towers before they collapsed?

How hot was it inside the Pentagon before it collapsed ?

How hot was it inside the doomed plane that hit the ground in Pennsylvania ?

How hot is it inside those military uniforms with full body armor our men and women are wearing in Iraq,Afghanistan, and Lord knows where else in the world ?

AND MORE TO THE POINT, SEN. DURBIN, WHAT WAS AND IS THE FEAR FACTOR SUFFERED BY THE PEOPLE CONNECTED TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS?

Me too.

What next?  Ho Chi Minh chants?

Surely the voters of Illinois can send this guy a message.  After all, they have children, even brothers and sisters, who this 60s throwback is maligning.  The good people of Illinois must reign in this dangerous fool.

This can't last forever.

No, it can't. Creeps like Durbin and Ted Kennedy are literally providing aid and comfort to people bearing arms against American soldiers, yet they walk about fearlessly and have a media machine applauding them. We are cowed, and they know it.

First Rep. Charles Rangel (D) compares Operation Iraqi Freedom to the Holocaust, and now Sen. Dicky Durbin (D) compares Gitmo to a Death Camp.

These men are traitors, but in this day and age, they cannot be charged. They have free reign to act like Lord Haw Haw and Tokyo Rose.

I know for a fact that Senator Durbin's office has Internet access, and I presume that some of his staff are sufficiently sober and alert to use that access to look up the plain English the language of the Geneva Conventions.

Therefore, there is no excuse for Durban to be DEAD WRONG about the Conventions. He is a bald-faced liar about the Conventions, and about the American troops. He is a disgrace to the nation, a disgrace to his state, and even (tough as this is) a disgrace to the Democrat Party.

Proper condemnation of this person is not possible on a website that requires us not to use bad language.

I'd like to know if the people of Illinois agree with their senator.

Anyone seen any polling?
