Tancredo: immigration reform may push him into presidential race
June 12, 2005
NASHUA, N.H. --U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo says he is so dissatisfied with the pace and direction of immigration reform, he is considering running for president to deal with it himself.
"If no one is willing to pick up the banner... yeah, I'll run," the Colorado Republican said Saturday during a visit to the state with the earliest presidential primary.
"Though I say that with a great deal of trepidation. It seems like a daunting task. But we need to get a president in there who will support this," he said. "I don't know what else to do."
Once, New Hampshire might have seemed an unusual backdrop for taking a stand on illegal immigration. But recently the state has been the focus of heated debate on just that issue.
Citing a need to uphold national security, several police chiefs have been using criminal trespassing laws to press charges against illegal aliens found in their communities.
The tactic, which has been challenged in court, has drawn praise and criticism from around the country.
Tancredo first visited New Hampshire in February, when he gave an award to New Ipswich police Chief Garrett Chamberlain, calling the chief a national hero for charging illegal immigrants with trespassing.
Tancredo said the reason for his visit to New Hampshire, and eventually to Iowa, is to get a leader in the White House who understands the threat illegal immigrants pose to the country's security.
He said federal prisons overflow with illegal immigrants, some of whom aim to hard people.
"And they need to be found before it is too late. They're coming here to kill you, and you, and me, and my grandchildren," he said, pointing at people in the audience. "It's just despicable."

Yeah right Mr. tancredo, you sure do know how to backstab Tom Delay.
Hey Dane, I think you've now mentioned "Tancredo backstabbed DeLay" about 1,100 times on this forum. Do you have any goal in mind? Are you going for 2,500 times? How about 5,000 times? Or maybe even 10,000 times?
GO Tom Go!!
Tom Tancredo certainly has my vote and my confidence. He is a fine conservative with an impeccable conservative Republican voting record. He will make a fine President for all Americans.
Tom Tancredo has a 100% rating from the ACU as well as his 100% pro-life record. He is a good friend to the conservative grassroots movement.
Tom Tancredo has certainly been trying his hardest to get his message across in all parts of America that illegal immigration has hurt this nation's sovereignty and security.
America needs to wake up with this problem. By allowing illegal aliens to take over our land and steal our nation is an "ACT OF WAR" and should not be tolerated.
If elected president, Tom Tancredo will certainly use his executive powers to influence Congress to authorize the use of the military to guard our pourous borders from illegal aliens as well as radical Muslim terrorists. I don't see how the American people would be against this idea when 80% of Americans wanted to end illegal immigration once and for all.
Oh, yeah, I'm sure Tancredo has to be taken kicking and screaming to the spotlight.
Anything that gets this issue on the front burner.
If GWB doesn't begin to respond to the wishes of 80% of the population, the invasion could sink his presidency...both from a popularity standpoint and the fact that for all we know BinLaden could've walked across the Mexican border and be hiding in the US (slight exageration).
There's only one way just about any member or the HOR gets traction. That's if the big guys in power are so insensitive to the will of the people that they are the only ones representing the people.
It's not about Tom Delay. It's about saving our culture, economic livelihood, way of life, and environment. Besides that, would you rather have Hillary become the spokesperson for the issue?
Excellent news
Tancredo / Paul in '08
Wow! There really is a Team America; and it was founded by Tancredo:

F..., Yeah!
If Tancredo runs I'll vote for him. No questions asked, yeah, it's one friggin issue and this is it.
What's Pence's stand on illegals?
Agreed. I've never been a "one issue" type voter. But I'll be damned if I can think of many conservative issues that are being serviced at this time. I'll take this one issue if someone will just fix it.
Thanks.
Pence/Tancredo would be a great ticket. If Tancredo, doesn't run, then Pence would be my first choice among the other potential Republican candidates for president. In fact, he is probably the only potential Republican candidate other than Cong. Tancredo to which I would send money or for which I would volunteer time.
Tancredo for President 2008/2012.
Wow, this is SUCH a surprise; who would have ever thought, huh?
Heh.
"it's one friggin issue and this is it."
Immigration will be in the 21st century what the civil rights movement was in the 20th.
It's a National Issue that will determine whether we'll survive as a nation or be driven to extinction by alien, anti-American, non-European forces.
Many Americans living today will see the effects of this seminal change. Remember this when it happens.
