A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 6.15.05

President Bush and Russian President Putin discussed reform of the U.N. Security Council in a phone call initiated by Putin. The conversation came amid intrigue over a push by Japan, German, India and Brazil to become permanent members of the Security Council. [Will John Bolton be the USA's final ambassador to the UN?]

The president continued urging Congress to pass an energy bill, while speaking about energy efficiency at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington.

A Senate committee voted to back President Bush's pick to head the Food and Drug Administration, acting FDA commissioner Lester Crawford, but Senators from both parties threaten to block a vote by the full Senate.

Condi Rice attended a National Geographic Society event to recognize the plight of refugees worldwide.

There are pictures from the president's attendance at last night's GOP fundraiser in DC.

Yesterday, Laura Bush attended a People with Disabilities function in DC.

Welcome to Sanity Island!

QUOTE: President Bush called on Congress to pass a national energy policy. "The American people know that an energy bill will not change the price of gas immediately. But they're not going to tolerate inaction in Washington as they watch the underlying problems grow worse. ... To address the root causes of high gas prices, we need to take four important steps toward one vital goal -- and that is making America less dependent on foreign sources of oil."

Laura Bush is welcomed on stage by Bill Marriott as his brother, Richard Marriott, left, looks on at the Marriott Foundation for People with Disabilities event in Washington on Tuesday, June 14

Yahoo caption: "A divided U.S. Senate committee voted to back President Bush's pick to head the Food and Drug Administration, acting FDA commissioner Lester Crawford, on June 15 2005, but Senators from both parties threaten to block a vote by the full Senate. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma has said he plans to place a hold on Crawford over condom labeling -- complaining the labels are not accurate and must give specific information on how well they work and the diseases they prevent. Condoleezza Rice greets Paul Rusesabagina, right, the heroic innkeeper who turned his hotel into an impromptu refugee camp during the genocide in Rwanda, joined at center by actress Angelina Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, during a program recognizing the plight of refugees around the world, at the National Geographic Society Headquarters in DC today. The story of Rusesabagina's courage amid ethnic slaughter was retold in the film 'Hotel Rwanda.' World Refugee Day will be observed June 20.

Hi Rob. Noticed your tag line -- did you catch my bracketed Bolton question in the first paragraph today?

I really am wondering how long the UN is going to last.
